This apartment complex is amazing!
It is clean, neighbors are friendly, and their maintenance team is reliable and quick! A rare find. I was locked out of my apartment on Easter and the maintenance man was here within an hour as he promised. Dont let the reviews deceive you, Shawnee Apartments is a hidden gem in the wonderful and family friendly Penrose neighborhood.
Theres a washroom on every floor so you have options if a washer/dryer isnt working on the floor you live on. The leasing consultant Janay (sorry if I spelled her name wrong) is the most friendly down to earth non-judgmental leasing agent in this area! For the price the apartments are spacious with wood floors, very easy to clean and maintain. If you want the newest appliances & amenities this place isnt for you you can find plenty of those apartments in Arlington with a hefty price tag.

Did a private tour. I think they were in the middle of remodeling. Building is noticeably outdated, but many VA homes are. Certain areas were smelly though.
They're pretty affordable, but the remodeling might change that. Good luck.
