Dillard's, Inc. is a specialty retailer of clothing and other related items, focusing on lower-priced fashion. The Company was founded in 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Ben L. Franklin as The Great American Company and began with the purchase of the Albee Department Store. This five-story department store was opened in 1887 by George Albert Albee. In 1930 he purchased an eight-story building at 10th Street and Central Avenue and opened a second location. In 1938 the Company changed its name to Dillard's, Inc., abbreviated for "Dillards."
The Company focuses on delivering style and value to the Mid-American consumer through its three retail formats: Dillard's, Dillard's Men's, and Little Dillard's. Dillard's flagship store is located in downtown Kansas City, MO.
