I was recently looking for a mortgage and I wanted to go with a smaller, local bank.  I have a great credit score and was looking for an easy conventional loan which I was able to put 20% as a down payment.  Should have been the ideal customer for a quick easy mortgage.  I found Cornerstone because they have a branch within a mile of my new address.  They were very responsive at first and offered me a competitive rate so I decided to go with them after vetting a few other lenders.  Everything was good until I started to put some money into things like appraisals and other up front fees.  The communication from this bank literally stopped dead.  No returned phone calls or emails.  I had to physically drive to the main branch one day because no one would reply to me.  I provided every document requested of me within 24 hours of the request and somehow this bank still managed to take 50 days to get to a closing! In fact I almost lost the deal because of how long it took them!  It came down to the very last contractual day.  They had missed my contractual close date which they had known for 2 months and then took another 8 days on top of that to close!  The best part is that they then told me that because it took so long to close that my rate lock had expired and they would be charging me an additional $2300!!!! I had no other options but to pay it or be homeless.  The staff, Linda Ash, Christine Shabazz, and Tom Wilbourne were rude and inept.  I believe it was a bait and switch scam and that they purposefully took so long to close the loan to charge me more.  Do not do business with these people.  Learn from my $2300 mistake.  The mortgage department at this bank is a complete Scam!

They're small, everyone knows you, and they're friendly. Free checking, no strings, was the selling point for me.

A good small community bankI've had 3 accounts (cd, money market and checking) at this bank for at least 5 years and have never had a problem. Their savings rates are higher, and their fees are either lower or non-existent.  Yes, their interaction with Quicken is not so easy and they could have more and better ATMs. But those are small inconveniences. This bank needs customers and those who look into them will find, like I did, that customer service there is personal and fast. I'm in the process of migrating a business account from Wells and I'm seeing how much difference there is.  This new account will save $144 in monthly fees alone (annually).  No charge for Bill Pay or viewing/receiving check and deposit images. No direct Quicken downloads, but Direct Connect is about as easy, and is used at many other financial institutions, esp. smaller ones and credit cards. Don't give your money to the mega-banks. Keep it local and keep it small.  What's the worst that can happen?  This bank is FDIC insured after all.
