GameStop is a retailer based in the United States that sells video games, consoles, game merchandise and other electronics. Store locations buy used games, consoles and other electronics from customers to resell. It is the largest video game retailer in the world and owner of the video game magazine Game Informer.
GameStop operates a loyalty program known as PowerUp Rewards, where customers can earn points on purchases to redeem for rewards. Both free and subscription versions of this service exist.
The company was founded in 1984 as Babbage's, a software retailer based in Texas. It began to focus on video games due to the popularity of the Atari 2600 and then later began selling Nintendo games in the late 1980s. The company was briefly owned by Barnes & Noble Booksellers between 1999 and 2004 before officially becoming GameStop. GameStop absorbed EB Games in 2005.
In recent years, digital games and the shift to online shopping have hurt GameStop's business and the company has seen noteworthy declines. However, in 2021, Internet users made investing in GameStop's stock go viral. This caused a massive increase in the company's stock value over a period of two weeks. Since the incident, GameStop's stock has continued to perform above the expectations of experts.
