image First visit to PGH and wasn't sure where to stay, so picked this downtown location near a square. Check in was fine and staff was friendly and held out bags for us since we were early. Room was a decent size and beds were not too firm. One knock on the room was the heater/AC unit that rattled like a car needing a muffler which made it extremely difficult to sleep while it was running. The other was while using a towel to wipe up some water from the bathroom floor it came up filthy. Clearly this room has not been mopped (it's fake wood flooring with carpet only around the bed) in quite a while. One elevator - per another guest - dropped down a full floor (he told us as he was taking the stairs down) - and shortly afterwards was put out of service.
As for the location, it seemed ideal but - and maybe it's just Pittsburgh in general - it seemed pretty shady. Two women, screaming at each other, came into the lobby and continued their battled while the workers seemed disinterested. Another guest had to cajole them into taking it outside. The market square seemed to be visited more by homeless, tweekers and other junkies than anyone else. We never felt threatened, but also didn't go out late at night either. In talking to a bartender in the area he definitely made it clear we'd be better off looking at other areas for dinner (and gave us a great recommendation). Again, while the area didn't seem dangerous, it was definitely on the shady side.

image Hilton Garden Inn Downtown: Great central location! Our room was clean and comfortable, typical Hilton Garden Inn quality. The staff was friendly and helpful, and having the Revel restaurant on-site was a big plus.
Heads up: There's a noticeable homeless population in the surrounding area. It wasn't a safety concern for me, but something to be aware of, particularly if traveling with kids.
Overall, it's a solid choice for a central location and a predictable stay. You get what you pay for a clean, comfortable room in a great spot.

image This hotel was nice but I didn't really care for the heating unit in the room. It blew air all the time so it was never quiet. I tried to turn the blower off. but failed. I wasn't a fan of the valet parking but it worked well enough
