HI Portland Hawthorne Hostel

You get to meet people from all sorts of life and all from other countries. It is very environmental friendly and once a month kids from a high school go and volunteer and hang around talk to people. It is a very nice place to be even for a night.

Though some Portlanders are quite rude and angry when met, this is a clean, reasonably priced, easier to book than Hi Hostel Northwest Portland. Quite a few guests appear to sleep late, they appreciate others respecting quiet time. Concerns/Drawbacks: 1] Make sure one arrives by (expectation) 10pm or call before 9pm to let know you're on the way, will definitely arrive! (Delayed public transport caused a potential arrival time problem; Night intern Megan most helpful to positively solve my dilemma. Hope Manager allows her to work there longer.) 2] Hostel 'about 2+ miles east of downtown across Willamette River. Rec. using Transit Buses number 14 or 15--there's limited street/vehicle parking. 3] Local residential houses, commercial business allow TOO MUCH visible, "ghetto-like" graffiti and tacky yard signs that mar beauty, nature-- compared to other major US Cities, including (nearest) Seattle, San Fran.
