I won't lie, when the federal government took over the management of the historical missions it kind of took away some of the charm. However, I am glad that they did as the mission upkeep is now federally funded and well maintained for historically accurate tours. As the churches are still active...I recommend having special ceremonies on site...or just attending mass when available. It is beautiful to connect with our past through our shared religious devotion.
