Smart & Final is a chain of grocery stores headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States. It is the largest employee-owned food retailer and wholesaler in the United States.
Smart & Final traced its beginning to 1867 when German national Joseph Hahnel acquired a small grocery store on South Main Street in Los Angeles, California. The company name was trademarked in 1899 with flowers and birds as its logo symbolizing "a happy home."
That same year, Hahnel's sons Emil and Max opened the first branch store in San Bernardino, California. The company then began to expand by acquiring small chains of grocery stores established throughout Southern California and Northern Mexico. The name changed from Hahnel Bros. & Company to Smart & Final Inc. on January 5, 1920, after a trademark dispute with a Chicago-based dairy company named Hahn & Company.
In 1921 Smart & Final began selling wholesale produce under the name "Smart & Finicky." In 1926 the company allied with The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company to provide goods to A&P.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Smart & Final acquired grocery stores and warehouse facilities in Orange County, California. In 2000, Smart & Final was acquired by Ares Management L.P. In 2009 Ares Management L.P. sold Smart & Final to Marubeni America Corp.
Today, Smart & Final has over 80 stores in California and Nevada, including two SuperFresh locations. The company's headquarters are located in Santa Monica, California.
Smart & Final is an employee-owned retailer of fresh produce and bakery goods. As of 2021, Smart & Final offers an array of fresh produce from more than 50 California and Mexican farms. The company also carries a selection of bakery goods, deli items, dairy products, and other food products. Smart & Final offers a well-known "buy one get one free" (BOGO) program on all fresh items in eight or more packages.
