image Nice Japanese garden, very relaxing with a variety of winding exhibits/environments. Facilities were also nice for a public location - clear they cleans them regularly and kept them in good working order.
They were holding a cultural exhibition when we were there that was nice and interesting.
My biggest issue was that it felt like tickets were overpriced for what you got. $20/person is a steep price for timed admission tickets, but having heard how I just had to see the Japanese gardens since I moved to the area two years ago, I figured it had to be worth it. Ultimately, while the gardens were well curated and relaxing, they were also small and a bit underwhelming for the cost of the tickets. It felt as though had we not just (randomly) stumbled upon the cultural exhibition, it would have been a pretty quick visit. Even with the exhibition, we are out in just under an hour, which is fine, but not amazing when you are paying $60 for three adults.
The couple ahead of us in line when entering had got there half an hour late for their timed ticket, and were trying to get in and were turned away (which, fair enough), but they were simply told to get in line to buy new tickets. I would understand this if the tickets were cheap ($5), but I felt like from the price, there probably was a better way to go about it - maybe pull them out of line and find a time in an hour or two where tickets were still available and exchange the tickets - honestly, when I am paying $20/ticket I would hope there would be an understanding that sometimes stuff comes up and that may not justify an additional $40, but some flexibility.
Not saying that the ticket taker was acting inappropriately, she was perfectly pleasant, but maybe giving them some help so situations like this can be handled in a more reasonable manner would help.
Overall, I would say that the actual gardens are lovely, and well worth a visit, especially if you have a personal connection to the subject, but it is not a place I will be returning to or go out of my way to suggest to visitors.
Edit: One additional criticism - it seems like managements prominent piece of advice is that you should participate in their free group tours. Which I would agree with because $20/person for access to a lovely Japanese garden with a free tour is absolutely a great deal and would have been lovely. Problem is that this was never mentioned by any staff member, there were no signs for the tours, board listing the schedule of tours, or any other indication they were available. We absolutely would have taken full advantage of this option if we had any clue that it was available. Just a suggestion.

image Beautiful garden and very peaceful. Parking was difficult during a Saturday in July.

image This is definitely one of my favorite places in Portland and one of my favorite garden spaces in the country. What a gem of a space. Definitely sign up for a tour as it is time well spent getting the background and history of the space and learning about all of the thoughtfulness and intentionality that went into this beautiful space. It was great to catch a tea ceremony demonstration and to have tea in the tea house at the end. This is one place in Portland I will plan to visit on every trip.
