Please if your kids are black dont send them here. I went here as a young child and was discriminated badly here. I was told upon arriving that as campers we could not have water balloons in our possession or the camp counselors couldnt have them as well. Long story short, I was coming back from swim lessons and was told I had to take a buddy with me so we went in my cabin and washed the lake off of us. Hours later, I was approached by my counselor who told me that she had purchased some water balloons to prank the other campers and that they were scattered all on the ground and that I was the one who stole them from the cabin. This went on for hours me being accused of something I didnt do and not backing down on the fact that I didnt steal anything but because I am a black child at this time I wasnt aware of what was happening. The director came in and his name was Jim he proceeded to come in and didnt even ask me what happened he immediately went into my luggage and went through all my things took things out like my perfume and told my cabin mates to give the perfume to the counselor Jennie because it looked like it was hers was his exact words. This went on for a hour where Jim felt like he needed to search a kids personal property because of stole water balloons. He was very racist but as a child I didnt know why I wasnt being heard or believed. The next day was time to go home and I ran to my parents because honestly I just wanted to go back to my safe space and before I could even get to my parents there was Jim cutting me off and he proceeded to tell my parents that I stole water balloons from a counselor who wasnt suppose to have them in the first place. My parents were disappointed in me based on what Jim told them which was a lie. This happened so many years ago and Im an adult now but reflecting on this moment as an adult showed me that YMCA Storer Camp is racist and they have no problem with treating your black kids like the criminals they stereotype us to be. So if you are black dont send your kids here. Take it from me an adult, if you send your black kids here they will have moments like mine thatll traumatize them forever. Once I went through this, I understood exactly what racism was and I was able to understand why I wasnt believed when I told the director and the camp counselors that I didnt steal anything it didnt matter I was made out to be a thief and its literally because Im black that was it and that was all.
