Dick's sporting goods is a privately owned American chain of sporting goods stores founded in 1948. It is known for hunting, fishing, camping, personal protection and ammunition products, firearms and accessories. It was founded in 1948 as a small family-operated company called Dick's Shoe Store by Robert S. Dick. In 1968 he sold the company to Arthur E. Gould, who renamed it Dunbar Sporting Goods Company in 1970 before selling it again to Edward A. "Ned" Cook, who renamed it back to Dick's Sporting Goods in 1985 and made it a public corporation that same year with Cook as the CEO until 1996 when he retired from the company at age 70 when his grandfather hired his son David C. Cook to become the new CEO. In April 2008, Dick's Sporting Goods was purchased by Westgate Capital, a private equity firm based in Spring Hill, Tennessee. In September 2009, David Cook retired as CEO and Edward Cook died in October of that year. In February 2010, Dick's Sporting Goods finalized its sale to Westgate Capital for $750 million in cash and stock, completed on February 2, 2010. The sale of Dick's Sporting Goods was the largest privately held sporting goods retailer at its sale.
