My brother, sister-in-law, and I highly recommend Balboa Nursing & Rehab Center. Our 93 year-old mom stayed there for physical and occupational therapy for nearly 7 weeks after breaking her hip. The staff is so kind, nurturing, communicative, and helpful - from members of the finance office (Elena and Maria) to the social worker team (Diane and Tatiana) to the nurses (Nunu) and the occupational and physical therapists. My only regret is that I did not write down every wonderful person's name with whom my mom and we interacted so that I could identify everyone in this review. We are so grateful for the care our mom received, and she is thrilled to be back home now, continuing to make progress each and every day. Thank you, thank you Balboa N&R!

This was by far the best experience in the skilled nursing facilities my dad has been admitted to. One of the primary reasons was, from the beginning I was provided documents from admissions and constant communication by putting me in the picture with his treatment. I was really involved in the process and impressed by the cleanliness, friendliness and kindness of all staff. After discharge I appreciated the after care follow up and the treatment team coordination. Thank you for all you do and for helping bring my father back home for further comfort care. ~Balboa Nursing and Rehab Center, I thank you from the bottom of my heart you did wonders. Sarah

The most depressing nursing home weve ever been to. They have rehab in their name but its really just a long term nursing home. Most rooms have 3 people in them. Its old, dirty, run down and barren. Such an incredibly sad place to spend your last days/weeks/months of life. My mother fell and had a brain injury. She was in the hospital for a month and then went to the Springs rehab in La Jolla. She recovered enough to go back to her apartment at Merrill Gardens but had a cardiac event and had to go back to the hospital. After spending a week there she was transferred to the balboa nursing facility because the Springs had a Covid outbreak and wasnt accepting new patients. My mother spent a week at the Balboa facility where she quickly declined. By the time we got her out of there she wasnt eating or drinking which they didnt tell me. She passed away 5 days later. During her short stay at the balboa I saw the horrible situation there. They lost her dentures and her clothes. Eventually I found the dentures inside a large trash bag under a pile of someones clothes. At times when I visited she was in the fetal position on top of a bed with no blankets. They could never tell me if she ate or drank anything. The head nurse was watching sports on his phone while all the call alarms and lights were flashing on his screen. In the evening they put her and others in their wheel chairs with a table in front of them so they cant get up and put them in front of the nurses station for hours. There is no way to talk to the doctor. I left many messages with the nurse to have the doctor call me and never heard back. Dont go there except to die.
