I started using this branch seven years ago and transferred most of our funds to Chase over the years, because a banker who used to work at the main floor there was just great and helpful. Even though there had been prior experiences with some tellers at the branch who were not as professional (e.g., requiring extra documentations and trips to the bank when none of it was actually necessary for a basic deposit, as I later found out), none was as bad as my experience earlier this week with its manager Alfred Leal. Mr. Leal was condescending from the start, showing no patience at my explanation for an issue that was a little complex (multiple accounts, some of which required a POA document). He was also not hesitant about showing displeasure when I could not provide the nine-digit account number, making sure I understood that he now had to do the work to look for it--something a professional banker would not make a fuss about. When he figured out the issue, he focused not on getting the task done but on making me feel bad for the work he had to do. He started lecturing me about my "confusing" explanation because of a term that I may have used once that was not aligned with the bank practice; namely, calling the accounts for which I am the beneficiary as "my accounts." I felt he was unnecessarily nitpicking my wording, because other bankers at the branch have also used this general term as a short-hand for an otherwise cumbersome bank concept. So I responded that it was not necessary for him to spend time on this wording issue, for all that was needed to be done that day was photocopying the required documentation that I had brought in for the legal team. To this, Mr. Leal lashed out: "if you have this attitude, I won't help you." When I mentioned that I had driven from far away to get this issue sorted out for the second time at the branch, he appeared even more pleased: "I am the branch manager; you can go to another branch to help you" and wished me "a nice day." Well, that's it for me at this branch, unless the management is changed. This branch located near UCLA serves a lot of students and clients with diverse backgrounds and thus some complex transactions or legal documentation issues. Mr. Leal did not show the capacity to deal with such a clientele and banking needs like mine, much less leading the branch with his poor customer service example. Most of his staff have done better, so Chase needs to reconsider its managerial training and placement. As for Chase itself, well, if it continues to be a disappointing experience, I may gradually pull out all our accounts. Even though Chase has a professional-looking "customer complaints & feedback" page setup online, it does not actually provide an option for filing complaints in its pull-down menu. So I had to write my feedback under the least unlikely option: "account inquiry." Not a promising sign for a bank that claims to take its customer service seriously. Time to scout for a better bank.
