I was a first-time customer of Maui Wowi today at Dulles. Now, I love frozen smoothies. When I see an establishment that sells smoothies I feel a tinge of excitement. In this case, I was not aware that EVERY smoothie Maui makes has a banana in it. No one explained that banana was going to be in the drink and neither did the menu. The banana overpowered the pineapple and coconut that I crave; there was not a hint of piña colada in the mix. I was not interested in banana, so I returned, believing that there had been a mistake. I politely explained that I had ordered piña colada and not banana. The customer care specialist explained that piña colada has banana in it. I mistakenly believed she meant piña colada in general and not specifically from Maui. Her statement peaked my frustration. I thought she was trying to make a fool of me, so I assertively asked for my money back. She countered that she could not give me a refund but would make a piña colada smoothie, get this, without banana. I quickly took note of her nametag for later reference. However, the specialist did inadvertently make a fool of me (or I of myself) in the end because when she handed me the smoothie I advised her that it would have been easier if she had just made a piña colada in the first place, get this, “like I ordered.” I now know that she WAS RIGHT! At Maui Wowi, every smoothie has a banana in it. That is their policy, according to the website. Meanwhile, she made an excellent replacement smoothie and promptly tended everything professionally and courteously. In my defense, I was waiting around in Dulles for 4 hours and I’m from Texas. Anyone who has been in both places can tell you there is a difference between the two cultures. Perhaps Maui Wowi should post signage that explains their banana-smoothie policy if they want to keep their spot in the central hub of the entire f-ing world – best advice.
