After 2-3 years as their customer I decided to look around to see if I could get my insurance for less. I have bundled homeowners and auto. Called an independent insurance broker (everyone says they have the best prices right? They can compare everyone's quotes instead of being tied down to one company.) The independent agent could save me a whole $45 on auto (annually) at the cost of a $600 increase to my home-owner's insurance! +1 for Allstate! My bank called me (that's what started this) to see if I could save money buying through them. Because our house is inexpensive (90k coverage), insurance is already typically low. They quoted +$80 on my homeowners, and -$200 on my auto (both annually). While this might cause me to switch over, I'm about to buy a house that's over double the $$. If Allstate's home-owner's insurance stays so low, they'll still toast the competition . This time, they'll toast one of the nation's largest banks even with all their mass-purchase discounts. Bottom lines: 1. It's worth calling a agent dedicated to a single brand because they can get better prices than the independent guys. 2. Allstate is crushing the competition on home-owner's insurance. Even if the auto is slightly higher, it may well be worth it for the savings on homeowner's insurance (and double policy discounts are substantial). 3. Even after ignoring my insurance costs for 2 years, I came back to discover that I wasn't being over-charged. The prices are still competitive enough that I'd choose them again even if I wasn't already with them. Unlike Spectrum, the price doesn't creep up year after year.
