The Sugar Warehouse

Well, most of what you will find when researching this structure online will be real estate listings---in 2002 it was converted into condos---glad they saved it but the history is interesting too. It was built completely of brick, iron and cement so as to help prevent destruction from fire (evidently there had been a devastating fire not long before it was constructed). This is from a contemporary Scientific American story of 1853 about the building: "The beams, floors, roof, door-cases, window-cases, doors, window sashes, shutters, inner-doors, and everything about the building which is not of brick and mortar is of iron. Heavy iron columns in rows sustain the floors. There will be fire-proof dividing walls through the building...Included in the machinery of the concern will be four large vacuum pans nine feet in diametertwo of them to be of iron and two of copper. Twelve large steam boilers will be used. They will employ about 300 men who will turn off about 1,000 bbls. of refined sugar per daya business of about $100,000 [that's 1853 dollars folks]."
