I purchased a water softener from McIntyre many years ago and it NEVER softened the water or worked properly despite no less than 10 service calls from McIntyre. Finally I removed their water softener and purchased a Water Boss from Home Depot. That was 15 years ago and it has been workin go flawlessly ever since. Do not do business with McIntyre If you want soft water.

In February 2020, I scheduled a visit from McIntyre Soft Water Service to check and maintain my 16-year old GE Avantapure water softener. I called McIntyre because their decal was underneath another company's decal on the softener tank. I had used the other company before and they only wanted to sell me salt and water testing. I figured that McIntyre were the original installer of my system so I called them to come and check my system over and do any routine maintenance.. The tech showed up but did little work. He was friendly guy who chatted with me and told me there was nothing that needed to be done to maintain the softener except add salt on a regular basis. He looked at the system, told me about their salt service and little else. He didn't even do a water test to determine whether the system was functional -although I knew it worked because I do regular water analysis on my well and treatment system through a certified lab. The only thing that he did was to increase the programmed figure for the number of grains of hardness in my water from 20 to 30 -just in case, I suppose, I would sign up for his salt delivery service. This results in a faster consumption of salt. I have lab records that go back 5 years that consistently show that my water contains 18.1 grains of hardness. Having some knowledge of the system, I changed it back to where it needed to be. For this service, I was charged $79. Fast forward 15 months. Salt consumption went to zero. Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) deposits accelerated and covered everything from the kitchen counters and faucets to the toilet bowls. Treated water showed 320 gr/l of hardness. My softener was out of service. Having on three occasions encountered services that were only interested in peddling expensive new systems or salt delivery services, I took it upon myself to learn about the unit and serviced it myself. It was filthy. It was clogged with years of iron oxide deposits and CaCO3 in the filter screens and valves. There was a hard block of salt blocking the brine tube inlet. It only took me 90-minutes my first time to clean the unit and put it back in operation. It was messy but straight forward. My 16-year old softener now works like a champ. Summary. I understand why the previous owner of my home stopped using McIntyre. The tech that they sent me was lazy and didn't want to screw with a messy cleanup of an older softener. He only wanted to pedal salt. I will stay away from these guys. If I knew what I know today, I would have chased him when he told me that softeners don't need to be maintained. I would have also rejected the invoice. I know more now and will take care of annual cleaning and regular media conditioning on my own. When the electronics finally bite the dust or the media needs replacement, I'll buy a new softener and install it myself. There is no mystery to this machine. It's simple: a clock, a multi port valve, a media tank and a salt bin with a brine tube. Most of the parts are available on the internet if they need to be replaced -even the clock and valve. You Tube has dozens of great videos on how to maintain, diagnose and repair softeners. Don't let some salt peddler overcharge you for little work. Besides, carrying a few 40-pound bags of salt from the car to the basement every few months is good exercise.
