I really dont know where to start about this store and this company. First let me start by saying that I have a business where I sometimes purchase American Apparel items wholesale. I do it when my customers ask for it. This is where I see how grossly obscene the markups are for this mediocre apparel. As an example, I needed to purchase some additional dresses that we needed for a client promotion. We purchased these from an American Apparel wholesale distributor for $8.75 each. We also purchased shirts retailed at American Apparel for $36 at a wholesale price of $6.50.
It tuned out that we needed to get 4 more dresses and didnt have time to get them shipped so we went to the store and purchased the exact same dress for $40.00. We werent sure if we would use them all and asked if we could return them. The salesperson said sure that would not be problem. As it turned out we only needed 1 of the 4 we purchased but when we tried to return them were told that they would only issue store credit or an exchange. Now when someone tells me that you want return something I figure if they dont tell me there are conditions I assume a return means we will get our money back. Well NOT AT AMERICAN APPAREL. Once this unscrupulous retailer gets your money no matter how bad or unneeded your purchase is you aint getting your money back from American Apparel.
The worst part was the attitude of the little pissant sales clerk who greeted me when I tried to explain my situation. He actually enjoyed my frustration and was absolutely no help. He actually gave me the wrong phone number for the corporate office. This was true of all the rest of the employees I encountered.
So if you want to buy grossly overpriced, low quality apparel you should run to the American Apparel store in Evanston. Keep in mind that the wholesale pricing I am quoting is from American Apparel or a distributor. That means that $40 dress was probably $3-$ or less total cost to AA.
This place is not only a complete rip-off it is an offence to modern day retail customer service. When you have retail establishments that bend over backwards to meet customer needs you have an American Apparel that hides offensive customer service behind company policy. It is no wonder that this company is constantly on the verge of bankruptcy . THIS PLACE SUCKS. STAY AWAY!
