Heartland Health Care Center-Decatur

This place is a total disaster.  My brother in law is in there for rehab purposes.  So what do they do instead of helping him to the bath room they let him per himself and a day later he is in a diaper. First what??? He is able to walk by himself with assistance. So basically there lazy people. Dont ever put anyone here ever.

If I could give them no stars I would. My Dad had to go there for rehab after heart surgery. Dr. Kahn who is the administrator of the place was also his personal doctor. He was sent there from Barnes in St . Louis where he was already getting stronger. He started having trouble with diarrhea a couple of days after arriving. It took theDoctor over a week and a half to finally come see him. All the time he's barely able to keep food down and what he does keep down goes right through. They finally did tests and put him on antibiotics for it but did nothing else. A few days later he's obviously dehydrated and we were finally able to get him out of there and to an emergency room. They told us he was close to renal failure because he was so dehydrated and almost lost the use if his kidneys. If you love your family member don't let them go here. The only one star earn in ng us most if the staff were nice and caring but not all. One worker when asked to fix his bed after an accident just threw another sheet on top of the dirty one. Sometimes they took longer than half an hour to answer a call button. The facility seemed clean but hasn't been updated since the 60s. Floors and fixtures are obviously old and the rooms look run down. Considering the cheapest rate is over 6000 a month to stay there its obvious the money is not being spent on the facilities or enough caregivers. Stay away from this place. My Dad was sent to the Hickory Point home when he left the hospital which was 10 times better than this one.

Do not take your loved ones here. The lack of communication between medical staff and the rampant lack of advocacy for patient needs almost caused one of my grandparents to go into renal failure after being transferred to Heartland for rehabilitation.

This home does not even deserve 1 star. The care a family member of mine received recently was beyond unacceptable. Food was never delivered on time, in fact almost 1-2 hours late generally. When the food was finally delivered and he was done eating, they never would come get remaining food and tray until next day leaving it to rot all night at his bedside. Water wasn't given and he even had to drink out of the bathroom faucet one night. Other patients somehow were able to get into the ice machine area and they contaminated the ice making people sick. This place needs a lot of work and I would NEVER recommend using this for the care of your loved ones.
