I bought my first fly rod and reel from Dan in 1997. I didn’t have much money to lay down. He set me up with an affordable rod, reel, boots, vest and waders. He wasn’t going to make much money on me. He pointed out the photo of his uncle on the wall. “This is the man who taught me to fish, my uncle”. He told me that fishing is about getting out in a beautiful river and enjoying being there. He said it wasn’t all about catching a fish. I live in Seattle now. When I get skunked fishing, which occurs more than I like, I sometimes think of him. He was a cool, good guy.

I was interested in catching salmon. He gave me every tip imaginable, and advised on my tackle setup. I bought some lures he had, and was surprised at the level of service and information he provided. In reading other reviews here I would agree that the shop is not pristine. You know what, I loved the shop's feel, you want pristine get yourself to target and blow money on a personality-less corporation. I would go here everyday of my life and learn about fishing from him, and get whatever gear I need here. Fantastic. Amazing. Gold Star. Best place in Chicago.

Great place, a bit unorganized though i still felt comfortable with Dan and his place. He is very knowledgeable and answered every question i had. Pretty much had everything i could imagine ever needing too. Dan is an eccentric guy in his own right, He is one of those types of people who will return what ever you give as far as attitude. You can be uneducated in your questions just don't be an idiot and give respect where it is due. I will surely return when ever a need arises and would rather support him then any major retailer. He is a rare breed of shop owners dedicated to his way of life and the great knowledge he retains is worth the visit alone!

I'm not sure there is someone out there with more knowledge about fishing than Dan . I went there to buy a fly rod and he was very careful to sell me a rod that fit my needs . I told him I was going to fish the Sheboygan River , he told me a lot that I needed to know about fishing that river . His advice paid off huge , I had a great day on the water . Thanks Dan .
