It has been 1 month and 3 days since we lost our beloved mom/grandmother. This was our first personal experience with Hospice and our first time in a very long time losing a loved one apart of our immediate family. Our mom/grandmother was our family's Matriarch. My family and I are extremely disappointed with the service provided by Vitas as an entity. It is my understanding that Hospice is a full range of services that put patients and families in control, giving them hope about their last days, weeks and months together. Because there was so much unaccounted for time on Vitas’s behalf, my family and I didn’t have the opportunity to prepare for what was underway. No one told us my grandmother’s life expectancy or in our case that in approximately 17 hours upon being discharged from the Hospital and transported home she’d be gone. We had no one to look to for guidance. (Not a physician, a nurse, hospice aide, chaplain, etc.) Where was the emotional and spiritual support? Phone call, after phone call, after phone call... Vitas didn’t even care enough to give us a call back in a timely manner. In instances such as this, time was not on our side. All we had was each other to rely on. I wouldn't recommend using this company and I feel horrible that we decided to take this route. Unfortunately, due to my grandmothers condition, we had to act fast and didn't have time to read the reviews.

Don’t use this company if you care about your loved one. My mother-in-law is under 24 hour care right now we’ve been notified that they are so short staffed that are not able to provide us the nurse that we are supposed to be having for the next 24 hours my wife has been covering the shift from 7 AM this morning till seven tonight and now we’re notified that there is no nurse for the night this is the worst company I would ever think you would want To use if you care about your loved one

My mother’s desire was to die at home with her family and little dog nearby. It wasn’t easy, but without Vitas, we would have never been able to give her the care at home that she needed. Her first nurse, Idalia was an angel who prayed with my mom, shared the outside world and later sent her cards of comfort when she was reassigned. Even though she was no longer caring for my mom, she continued to send beautiful, heartfelt cards of encouragement. Her next nurse, Daphanie could not have been better. You cannot buy love and compassion which is what Daphanie provided along with competent medical care and knowledge of resources needed at home to make my mother’s transition the best it could possibly be. She initially came weekly until my moms condition deteriorated. She was then making daily visits and was providing individual crisis care at home. She made herself available by text and phone which gave me confidence to care for mom at home. On the weekend and during the night, an on call nurse promptly arrived when I needed them. When my mom passed, the Chaplin stayed for two hours to comfort us and help with contacting the funeral home and did not leave until everything was taken care of. The physician and Team 1716 were more than wonderful. My mom, a retired RN was able to make her own health care decisions, all of which were honored because of Vitas. Her family will forever be grateful. Thank you.

I need to leave two separate reviews. The hospice itself along with the care team in the facility were all wonderful. The admissions process, not so much. I hate that one of the last moments seeing my Nana involved the admissions nurse, Sam treating her like a lab experiment gone wrong. While my aunt and I were devastated at my Nana’s bedside, Sam had the audacity to bring in a student to examine my grandmother’s feeding tube wound. This was NOT the time or the place to act so callous and uncaring. How dare you, Sam. For this reason alone, I would not recommend the facility to a grieving loved one. Do better.

The nurses, aide, doctor and chaplain couldn't have been more wonderful to my husband, during the short time Vitas cared for him. They couldn't have been more caring, compassionate and professional. I would not hesitate to reccomnd Vitas / Maitland highly.
