Dr. Garfein has been very helpful for me. He is given me more tips to learn more about my self and caused me to look at things differently. Saved my marriage. Forever grateful

Seeing doctor Garfein has been changing my life and the way I look at my future. Even though I am a fairly new patient, I find him to be very good at what he does. he does not push any issues and takes his time to really understand what i am saying or thinking. I am grateful to have found Dr. Garfein and look forward to a healthy mind for a long time to come.

I was looking for treatment for grief after losing a family member. Dr. Garfein came very highly recommended for both one-on-one therapy and psychiatry. However, I found my short experience with him to be anxiety inducing, condescending, and borderline exploitative. Dr. Garfein "squeezed" me in very early for an evaluation appointment after a rushed phone introduction. He showed up 5 min late and asked me some standard questions, but offered no response to the answers given. There was no compassion, no acknowledgment, just some scribbles on a note pad and on to the next question. This was also during the height of COVID in October, with state-wide mask orders in place. He did not wear a mask for the entirety of our one-on-one, in-person, indoor appointment. After 40 minutes Dr. Garfein informed me our time was coming to an end and he had another appointment after mine. I finally interrupted to ask MY questions about billing, treatment options, and expectations. Only then did I find out he charges 3x what my previous therapist charges. He told me he couldn't discuss treatment options because it was too early in my treatment. He almost seemed offended I would even ask. He told me to call in to make the next appointment. Before I could press, he cut me off, citing his next appointment. I left with more questions than answers and a very raw feeling of being interrogated with no support. I called and left a message the next week to let him know I would not continue treatment with him. I received no reply, follow-up, or confirmation. Three weeks later, I received a bill for a full hour at a rate higher than he'd quoted me.

I was a patient of Dr. Garfein for 2 ½ years. Recently I needed to cancel an appointment due to medical reasons. I had informed Dr. Garfein two weeks earlier that the appointment date was tentative. Three days prior to the appointment I called Dr. Garfein and confirmed the cancellation. Despite giving him adequate notice, Dr. Garfein still charged me for the missed appointment. He cited his policy of charging patients for cancelling scheduled appointments (regardless of notification time) unless he is able to fill the time slot with another patient. In addition, Dr. Garfein had recently implemented a 14.3% fee increase without notifying his patients. Dr. Garfein’s accounting practices suggest that he emphasizes profit over patient relationships. He created a stressful situation thereby violating the trust between patient and doctor. His unrealistic cancellation policy and intransigent position cost him this patient. I would not recommend him as a therapist.
