    Rest in peace Sears of the East. This store is scheduled to close sometime in September 2018. There's still chance to go in and find some great bargains. The store actually has been in decline for the last several years as you will see from the reviews. Employees' morale was probably low which resulted in some poor customer service. I've actually been shopping here for years and because of my refusal to fully adapt in the modern existence, I actually still go here and pay my monthly Sears credit card bill even though my store credit card has long been converted into a a Sears MasterCard and it would be much easier to pay it online. I guess I'm just holding onto a few of those old habits from the 70s. This Sears actually is the remnants of what was once the Great Sears store located in the iconic Sears Building on the south edge of Downtown Syracuse. When the first planned enclosed Mall within the Syracuse area was built in the Eastern suburbs of Fayetteville, Sears decided to close permanently it's downtown store and locate a new Sears in the Fayetteville mall. The closure of that downtown Sears store at the South edge of downtown, actually resulted in in the shrinking of what was considered Downtown Syracuse. After the Fayetteville mall was built, Shoppingtown decided to compete head-on by enclosing its strip mall built in the late 50s. As a result, Shoppingtown outdid the Fayetteville Mall and managed to coax Sears into its newly expanded enclosed mall which was attracting larger crowds then the Fayetteville Mall which was buried deeper into the eastern suburbs of the yet to be fully developed suburb of Fayetteville. But by the early 1990s Shoppingtown Mall was to meet its match from a larger multi faceted mall built on the South Shores of Onondaga Lake known first as Carousel Center and then later expanded and called Destiny USA. The Shoppingtown was also no match for the changing shopping habits of Suburbia, preferring strip malls set back behind parking areas over the enclosed malls of the 70s and 80s. There was also the growing use of online shopping which added to the demise of enclosed shopping malls. Those Sears remained faithful as the one lasting strong anchor to Shoppingtown as the other anchors one by one left moving in to strip mall developments or closing their stores all together. But with other Sears stores still in the Central New York area and the general decline of Sears retail stores, I'm sure the corporate leaders of this long existing retail enterprise could no longer justify keeping the store open. So come in while you still can and find some deals. Come visit the Sears that started in downtown Syracuse, that went to Fayetteville, and then came back towards Syracuse to DeWitt, before it is put to rest sometime in September 2018.
