The daycare area has an employee that is extremely concerning. Her name is Jinx and she has black hair with a shaved head. She works in the evenings. I have had a good experience with every other employee there except this one. There is two areas the kids play in the back room with toys and the playground area. My child likes to play in the playground area before entering into the play room. Some employees say there is no supervisor in that area so they have one person stay in the play area and another employee comes out to the playground area. This has never been an issue until my experience with Jinx. Upon arrival I requested to have my daughter play in the playground area. Jinx said No there is no supervisor so I responded ok can a supervisor please come out? There were three employees total in the daycare area one holding an infant. Jinx responded with a simple no and no further explanation on why this cannot happen. I said ok well if I force my daughter into the play room she will cry. I brought her into the playroom and my daughter had a meltdown. I exited the area and watched from the waiting area. Jinx was unaware that I was observing from afar. As my daughter cried and screamed pleading to be let out of the playroom Jinx stood above her staring with a completely cold expressionless face. I walked up the playground area standing outside and said to her Can you please help her? Or bring her out here to play? Youre just staring at her! Jinx YELLED at me from across the play area Im NOT STARING AT HER! At this point my daughter was scared and screaming out of fear. She opened the door and my daughter came running out to me hysterically. She stood out in the playground area finally and said she will watch her. My daughter who was inconsolable at this point would just look at her and start crying. She felt extremely unsafe, understandably when you have someone staring at you while you only need comfort and help. Complete lack of compassion towards my child which is extremely alarming when working in childcare. I grabbed daughter and asked for her name. I walked to the front counter and asked for the supervisor. I was handed the supervisors contact card, and was told she was out of office. I called a left a very heated message and was promptly called back by Deborah. She was very understanding and compassionate to my situation and let me know the situation will be addressed. I told her I am unwilling to bring my child back if she is put into care with that employee, unless she will longer be there. I was told she normally works in the mornings, sometimes evenings. Deborah also let me know training is to be taking place soon. While I appreciated that, you cannot teach compassion. Something she was lacking entirely which gives me such a bad feeling that she is taking care of innocent children. If you do go to this location and see this employee there please consider this review.

I will start by saying, I love the YMCA! I took babysitter safety courses through them as a kid, did Camp Reed, and had my birthday party there shortly after it was built in 2000. Now, as an adult, we are members who frequent the gym and child watch, the open family swim, and the rock climbing wall. All of those experiences have been GREAT. AND! Their swim lessons are atrocious. My then 2 and 4 yr kids did lessons a year ago, and are now in classes as 3 and 5 year olds. The classes are mostly run by teenagers. I have no problem with that. That is a great job for a teenager. And also - the Y MUST train their employees to be better teachers. I have watched for many weeks as there is a different teacher every single week for an 8 week session. (This scares my kids when it's a stranger every time!) Teenagers who ask the PARENTS, "What should I do with them...?" Wasting 35 minutes out of a 40 minute class just talking to the kids and swimming around themselves. Starting class 12 minutes late to a 30 minute class. Unacceptable. Most of the classes for levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 have largely looked the same (with a couple of exceptions of exceptional lessons from substitute teachers). That is not encouraging! A swim lesson for "water acclimation Level 1" for a 2 year old should look nothing like "stroke introduction Level 4" for a 5 year old. As a teacher myself, I am BEGGING the YMCA to please train their teachers and raise the bar. As a parent to three little swimmers, I am BEGGING the YMCA to improve the quality of their swim lessons for the safety of my children and the wasted money leaving my wallet.

Hi Andres, you bring up a good point and we have asked our insurance company to reconsider that restriction. If it is possible to make that change, we will do so. In the meantime, be safe out there!

Hi Allison. Thank you for loving the Y for all this time! We hear you about your swim lesson frustrations and have taken a number of steps to address these concerns. Team has been making huge efforts to improve lessons and have laid out a structured and more comprehensive training for swim instructors. We have also hired new staff to be only swim instructors who are excited about helping our littles learn and be safe in the water. This focus on teaching should reduce the number of staff missed days and provide a consistent experience. One of the issues we still face is parents registering their children for the wrong level. When this happens, we can't usually move the child to another class because it is full. Unfortunately this may result in working on skills below the level they should be. To combat this, we are hoping to start running a clinic before registration so we can inform parents which level to enroll their child in.As for classes starting late, we now schedule instructors here 15 minutes before their lessons start so they have ample time to set up. There are also now 5 minutes between classes so instructors can touch base with parents about how lessons are going. We always appreciate feedback as it can alert to issues we can take steps to address. I hope you are seeing the changes reflected in your experience and your kids are having a great time learning and having fun!
