    Paul K Carlsen on ChamberofCommerce.com

image I hired Flo Mechanical to do a simple installation of a new thermostat in my home. He said that it would cost $85.00. That is all I wanted to be done.

While he was here, he installed the new thermostat. Then he took the cover off my furnace and informed me that I needed a new furnace and it would cost me over $8,000. I was shocked and told him “no, I don’t need a new furnace”. After I rejected the new furnace offer, he told me I would need a new motor. He said it would cost over $500.00. He told me this, even though the furnace seemed to be functioning fine once he had installed the thermostat.

Several days later, Flo Mechanical returned to “fix” the furnace by claiming he replaced the motor. I told him that it was running well and I wasn’t sure if I needed it repaired. He insisted that I needed to have the furnace repaired or replaced. At that time, he tried to sell me on buying a new furnace again for over $8,000+. Trusting that he is a professional and knows what he is talking about, I grudgingly allowed him to do the work on the furnace for which he charged me $568.70. It sounded a lot better than $8,000+.

Before he did the work on the furnace, I let Flo Mechanical know that ever since he had installed the thermostat weeks ago; our air conditioner was coming on simultaneously with the heat. So, we were running our air conditioner in concert with our heater. I thought he would fix that problem while he was doing the other work.

Shortly after he left and I paid him, my wife and I noticed the following:
    1. The furnace started making a lot of clatter and getting louder and louder. It was grinding, like metal on metal. It was frightening and sounded like it was either going to break down or cause an explosion. We were alarmed about the potential sparking and the probable ignition of the natural gas.
    2. We also became aware that the air conditioning was still coming on every time the heater did.

I called Flo Mechanical again, (please see his attached response wherein he stated that he would come out and fix the problem—the one that he created and misdiagnosed). He said that it would cost me an additional $298.26. This would have brought my total bill to $866.96. I did not trust him and was not going to provide Flo Mechanical more money.

I decided to call in another servicer to get a second opinion. It seemed like Flo Mechanical was using a “bait & switch” to keep making money. I had to turn our furnace off because the noise it was making was petrifying and I was worried about a potential fire or explosion. All of this was at the start of the winter weather and freezing temperatures.

I called a company called HVAC & Home Appliances, and he came out on 12-19-2022. He properly diagnosed the problem with our heater and repaired it. He also stated there was no need for a new furnace. (Please see his attached bill and receipt of our payment, his explanation, and the photos he took.) He had to rewire and configure the thermostat that Flo Mechanical had replaced the wrong way.
