image 12/30/2022 Buyer beware. Do your research online before you pick a new bank.I am new to Lubbock and went to the City Bank location on University Avenue to open an new account. I will be taking my business elsewhere after a horrible experience. I worked with Zaira and either she did not know anything about the different accounts, or she conveniently left out the details. When I asked her basic questions she pulled out her manual but still gave me incorrect information and could not answer my questions. Most of the employees at this bank appear to be college age students that could care less about your business, don't know their products, and do their best to confuse you. Due to the customer service I received and the runaround I got when asking questions, it seemed like this bank operates under the Wells Fargo business model of meeting quotas on new accounts openings. They do their best to give vague answers, confuse customers and get them to open up accounts they don't need. When I first arrived, I made it clear I wanted just a plain old regular checking and savings account with no debit card. Without even hardly discussing regular accounts, she immediately begins trying to sell me on the Reward Checking and the Rewards Plus account. She explained the plus account as a saving like account. This is false representation I found out later by doing my own research on their website that it is just a checking account without a debit card! So why would I need to open up both of these two checking accounts? Makes no sense. In addition, she told me both of these accounts would have around a 1.5-2% interest rate. I later found out this was completely incorrect. When I repeatedly asked her to explain the interest rates and the differences between the accounts, she couldnt give me many details and did not have any pamphlets to show me. She conveniently failed to mention that the higher interest rates are built around a tiered system based on IMPOSSIBLE debit card usage. The normal interest rate is 0.01% which is pretty standard, and in order to receive a higher rate, you have to have at least 8 debit card transactions posted PER DAY in addition to other requirements. The highest interest rate required 20 transactions per day! After asking her the same questions for 20 minutes and not getting any tangible answers, she drew a diagram on sticky note and told me the same thing AGAIN. She repeatedly told me this is what most of our customers do with the reasoning being these accounts are less restrictive than the others, which was not a lie, but was intentionally misleading. She would not give me any 'meat and potatoes' details about the accounts. I finally gave up and opened an account because it was almost 4 PM and I wouldnt have time to go anywhere else. The whole experience took over 1.5 hours because their computer system was also down. If I had not been in a hurry to get a few checks deposited/cashed I would have walked out. I had already tried to cash these checks at several other banks (with whom I did NOT have an account) and they wouldnt accept them because they were issued by an out of state bank. This is the ONLY reason I did not walk out. I will be returning shortly to close the account and take my business elsewhere. FYI they also charge for overdraft protection. The ONLY good thing I can say about them is they apparently dont charge for checks if you get the standard issue ones with the bank name. Dont waste your time.
