About five weeks ago I had open heart surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm and a valve. Although I wasn't looking forward to this I knew it had to be done. Dr. Atkins and his staff did an outstanding job. I was never in pain and I feel like I received the best treatment possible. I cannot think of a better physician for this procedure. It's a pain having to fight Houston traffic and the parking, but believe me it's worth it.

I was referred to Dr. Atkins by my health insurance for subclavian steel syndrome. If I had to do it again I would have ignored my insurance and found someone actually familiar with it. Dr. Atkins was supposed to take a vein from my leg to replace the one running down my arm but I ended up in and out of surgery three times over the course of a few days, had to have a blood transfusion and was in ICU for the better portion of a week and instead of three incisions had seven running up my left arm and both legs. I don't remember a lot of the time in ICU as having that much anesthesia pumped into me has destroyed my memory of the time but I do know there was paperwork I was made to sign to allow the subsequent surgeries when I was not in my right mind. Which wouldn't have been a problem, BUT, after a year the the third graft he put in also failed and since he used all excess veins in my leg on the first two botched surgeries there are no longer any available to try and have another doctor correct the problem. I know this because when I went for a follow up Dr Atkins told me there was nothing he can do, sorry. Sorry? Sorry for making my quality of life significantly worse than it was before I ever came to see you? Sorry you didn't refer me to someone who knew what they were doing in the first place? Maybe sorry you made it impossible for another doctor to try and fix the mess you made of my appendages. So yeah, if you're having heart issues or whatever, he's probably ok but do not go to see this man for subclavian steel syndrome. You'll come away with giant scars, loss of feeling in half your face, diminished blood flow in your legs and pretty much no blood flow in your arm.

After I had been seeing a neurologist and a heart doctor for 2 years after having a microstroke, I had a major stroke which required surgery for a congenital heart problem. Dr Atkins was the only physician who recognized and found the problem and performed life-saving open-heart surgery to fix it. I wish I had seen him after my first stroke. He is a very knowledgable, caring specialist. God bless him!
