I am a patient at the 11th floor Glaucoma Center with Dr. E Dale at Wills Eye. I recently scheduled an eye exam for new glasses on the 12th floor as a new patient with Dr. McConnell. (*Please read my review of Will's Eye Ophthalmology for more information.) Upon arriving at my appointment, the tech, as well as the physicians, were unable to access my chart. The Glaucoma Center records are apparently not on the same computer system as the rest of the hospital system. Since my records were not obtained, my eyes were dilated, twice*, in order to view my optic nerve.
Dr. Cai, the Resident in training, did my eye exam. He did a thorough history, and after examining my optic nerve and doing pressure tests, he was forthright in explaining to me the reason for my recurring visits to the Glaucoma Center -
both eyes had cupping (enlargement of the optic nerve opening).
I finally learned why I had been recalled to the Glaucoma Center!
Dr. Dale at the Glaucoma Center did not mention cupping to me during my visits. (3 appointments. She was unable to keep her second appointment with me, and I rescheduled after waiting an hour). When I had questioned her about her recommendation of return appointments, even though I had normal eye pressures in both eyes and no known family history, she did not inform me of the optic nerve enlarged opening/cupping.
If you have no other option for eye care, and you can sit for hours, Wills Eye will examine your eyes. Being told the findings of your exam and vision health is not something to expect.
I am a registered nurse. My expectations when seeking out a health-care professional are mutual respect, courtesy, expertise, honesty, and compassion. I will not be returning to Wills Eye.
