Book a room facing the river and then look to the left into the distance. mt. Hood.
From there you can drive to Withe River Falls and Mt. Hood.

Stayed here with my dog for a single night on the way home from Crater Lake. I was a little disturbed coming up the entrance road past some small old houses, wondering if it was a safe area. But all was good. Room was clean, view was good from king room in main building, although said houses were also in my immediate view below. Front desk staff was very pleasant. Location is a few minutes from the center of The Dalles but that's no problem. I could hear the highway and the passing trains below but it wasn't enough to disturb my sleep. It was nice to park literally outside my door - made it easy to unload my stuff. There isn't really anywhere to properly walk a dog except just to do its business, but Sorosis Park in town has lots of room to walk a dog on leash. Be sure to stop at Petite Provence Boulangerie for an amazing cup of coffee and breakfast or lunch.

I booked a reservation online on May 8th for the end of September. On the day of check in I get a threatening voicemail that because they didn't have a credit card on file they were going to cancel the reservation if I didn't call by 4pm. This seemed so ridiculous I actually checked Google to make sure their number and not a scammer before calling back! We could have been out a place to stay that we had been planning on staying almost 6 months in advance. I was not called or emailed at any point between day of booking and arrival to be notified that there was any issue. I called and gave them the card info and everything seemed fine.
We had stayed there before and choose to stay there again for the great views. At the time of booking it seemed like the deluxe king room (not deluxe king pet per email confirmation) would have the best view so that's what I chose. We stayed 2 nights and notice there had been a $25 charge added for each night for a pet fee and only one was refunded. I have not had a pet in over 30 years. In retrospect I should have gone back right then to get a refund as could easily prove we don't have one. I sent two emails a week apart about the erroneous $25 charge with no reply and no refund. I call them inquiring about it and they point out that I signed an agreement to stay in a pet friendly room. That doesn't mean we have a pet...it is not required. I ask for a copy of the form and was told the Manager would send it and reach out to me next day. She stated that it said on my reservation that I would be bringing a pet...I'd like to know how that came to be when I never contacted them. If they actually thought I had a pet we would have been charged for both nights not just one. I would assume that if they charge $25 per pet, per night the form I signed would also require a number of pets to be written which I did not put any number on this form. The call is ended with her reminding me that we stayed in a pet friendly room...This doesn't mean you can charge people for pet's they don't have!! Unsurprisingly, we have not received a refund nor has the manager contacted us.
We won't be staying here again but if you choose to please check your receipt closely when you leave for any hidden fees...
UPDATE: I disputed this $25 charge with my credit card company. After an investigation they ruled in my favor.

The location might seem odd until you see the view. A midcentury modern design in perfect condtion! Rooms are spacious and offer all the amenities. Continental breakfast. Dog friendly. Top notch!
