Mayer Paint & Hardware (Ace Hardware)

My favorite hardware store in Rochester, hands down. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly, especially in the paint department. I started going here for work, but now will drive out of my way to go there for my own projects.

Worst hardware store ever ....anytime I need the simplest of tools they never have it...never care or offer if they can get it they have no real knowledge of any of the products... Third time its happened I know they dont care but I will never go back

Neighborhood hardware stores are quickly becoming a rarity these days with the increasing presence of overwhelming "big-box" home improvement centers everywhere. Fortunately, we still have local alternatives like Mayer Hardware for help with those things that the big box stores simply can't help you with, like hard-to-find hardware items and good old-fashioned customer service. I needed help recently with locating half-pints of paint for a home project, and the ONLY place I could find what I needed was at Mayer Hardware. The man in their paint department was very knowledgeable in selecting the paint I needed, and offered some helpful suggestions for properly preparing the surfaces for painting. Even after buying the paint, and then browsing through the rest of the store, several of the store associates stopped to ask me if I needed any help with finding something else. I couldn't have gotten all of that assistance from any of the big-box stores because the associates at those big stores simply don't have the time or the working knowledge to really help you. And that's IF you can find an associate to help you at a big-box store. While this store is more compact than the giant home center stores, one benefit of that is you won't need GPS to navigate your way around. And, believe it or not, the most surprising thing I found here were a large number of funny greeting cards. Actually, a far better selection of really funny cards here than most other stores selling greeting cards. Greeting cards. At a hardware store. Who knew? I spent at least an hour or so browsing in Mayer Hardware. They carry a lot of hard-to-find hardware items here that you won't find at a big-box home improvement center. I suspect that, if you can't find a hardware item here, you may not find it anywhere else. Highly recommend a visit here. Thanks for reading. (01/04/24)
