My 2012 Chevy Volt had an engine code come up that disables the high-voltage electric battery and gives a "service high voltage charging system" message. Googling the issue showed that it is a common occurence with the 2012 Volts and has to do with a cooling tank leak or sensor short. Several of the message boards I read said that people took their Volts to a Chevy dealer and it was an easy fix. Chevrolet released a service update instructing dealers how to address/diagnose this problem. I called Nucar Chevrolet on Norwood to see if they could address the issue. The first time I called the service department, someone picked up the phone and hung it up. I called back and it rang and rang. I called a third time and someone answered. I explained my issue in detail and the person said, "Ok." I asked if I could bring it by for them to take a look at it, and they again said, "Ok..." I dropped the car off and explained the issue to Jimmy and mentioned two other small electrical bugs that are common occurences with the 2012 Volt: it beeps most times you lock it / walk away with the fob, and occasionally the TPS warning comes on on the highway. Jimmy said I would be called with an estimate and wouldn't pay for anything unless I authorized it. After three days, Jimmy called to ask if I would authorize a second hour of diagnosis. He explained that they hadn't looked at my car yet, despite having it for three days, but that the tech figured it would take an hour to diagnose the charging system code and another hour to look into the other two issues. I told Jimmy that all three issues come right up in a google search and are common problems with the Volt. It doesn't take an hour to pull a check engine code. I did not authorize the second hour and said to just look into the charging issue. Four days later, Jimmy called to say that the engine had to be removed for them to fix a heater on the high voltage/hybrid battery and it would cost $3000. Jimmy was confused and lacked confidence on the phone, explaining at one point that he was talking about a different Volt to me because he had been confused whose Volt was whose. Everything I read online explained that the specific engine code comes up due to either a coolant leak (the coolant tank was full = no leak) or a $30 sensor on the exterior of the coolant tank being faulty. Every time I brought this up, Jimmy told me they can't take car repair message boards into consideration. Even if they can't read message boards, I'm not sure why Chevrolet doesn't have protocols for addressing these common bugs. I told Jimmy I was not paying for the $3000 repair. I was then charged $170 for the diagnosis. They had my car for a week, didn't fix a thing or even look at two of the three electrical bugs I mentioned at drop off, and took my $170 just for looking at the car, which is more than the cost of a new tire or battery. Had I known they were going to charge me $170 just to look at my Chevrolet, I definitely would not have given them my car. I now have to find a mechanic who will listen to me and the hundreds of Volt owners and mechanics online who have dealt with this very common problem. I will never go near a Nucar dealership again.
