In 1883, Barney Kroger opened a small grocery store in downtown Cincinnati. He was joined in 1884 by his brother, Charles, who had recently returned from working in a grocery store in New York City. Together, they opened a second store five years later on Fort Washington Way.
The company’s rapid growth began when Barney Kroger purchased the stock of another brother, Fred, who had opened a small store across the street from his own. This purchase made Barney and Fred equal partners, and it set the stage for what was to become a huge business. In 1890, Barney Kroger bought out the interests of these two brothers and incorporated them as The Kroger Grocery & Baking Company.
Kroger’s original mission of quality products and service has never changed. From those humble beginnings, we have grown to become the nation’s largest supermarket chain with over 2,000 supermarkets in different states and the District of Columbia under two dozen local banner names, serving over three million customers each day!
Since its inception, Kroger has merged with or acquired several chains. The Kroger Co. Foundation was established in 1952 by the company's founder, Bernard Ralph Kroger. The foundation supports education and community initiatives in the areas where Kroger does business through donations and grants to partners focused on improving lives for children, fighting hunger, and making healthy food more accessible to families.
The foundation also assists military veterans and their families by providing support that addresses education, employment, housing, and other critical needs. Since 1952, more than $1 billion has been given to charitable organizations through the foundation.
