I brought my van to AAMCO on Monday 3/18/24. I called the Friday before 3/15/24 and spoke to Eric. I told him the van needed valve seals and he said bring it in. When I got there I spoke with Eric and the lead mechanic. I told them the symptoms and the lead mechanic agreed that it needed valve stem seals. I left there thinking I was in good hands and they would take care of it. Shop time for valve seals is 5 to 6 hours. When my phone rang about 5 and 1/2 hours later I figured they were calling to say its done. Instead they told me #1 they couldn't put it up on the lift cause its too high. #2 they couldn't hook there computer to it. Any mechanic knows that you don't have to lift it to do valve seals and a scanner for that year van won't tell you if it has bad valve seals. Bottom line they cost me $40 in transportation fees plus gas for there and back. Altogether 1hr and 40min driving time and a full day wasted. If they couldn't do the valve seals why not just tell me when I called on Friday? I feel as though they just had easier jobs waiting so they blew me off. Very unprofessional and put a hurting on me for the wasted time and money and I don't think they realize that or just don't care. Waste of time and money. Mark Hearn

Wouldn't replace the torque converter. I wanted to wait for it to do more damage so I would have to pay more.

Mark, I am sorry for any misunderstanding you have experienced during your visit. We start every visit with a “Free Vehicle Courtesy Check” which includes: Scanning for codes, Visual inspection of all major mechanicals, Check fluids for level and condition and test drive the vehicle to experience the problem. This way we can make an informed recommendation about the current concern with the possibility of any potential future repairs. In your case there was no communication from the vehicles computer, and we noted a lot of non-factory wire. The MAP sensor was unplugged, Wiring harness should be replaced including the wiring to the EGR Valve. The EGR Valve is probably responsible for the intermittent “No Start”. In addition we noticed the Intake gasket was leaking. It is our recommendation that at a minimum we pull the head replace valve seals, check valve guilds, resurface/reseal Head and seal intake this would take much more then 5-6 hrs. For a 1987 van the best recommendation would be to replace the engine. Let us know if we can help. Brian (Owner)

Terry,Sorry you took our recommendation the wrong way. You have to pull the transmission (the most expensive part of the job) to replace the torque converter. It has been our experience that if you have dirty fluid as in your case, that would suggests clutch ware and changing the fluid (with new detergents in it) and torque converter would finish off already warn clutches. It wouldn't be long before you would have to do the job all over again. It is in your best interest to run the transmission as long as you can and pay to do the job once. Please let us know if there is anything more that we can do for you. Brian (Owner)
