image At the turn of another birthday and after making the decision to try and really get off some of that COVID weight gain, I began to look for a trainer here in Honolulu.  Fortunately I came across Tony and Transformation Fitness.  I have been lucky enough to work with various trainers and workout at various gym around the world thanks to my job, but Tony's approach has truly been the best I've experienced thus far.  Tony is a true professional, knows his field extremely well, and has a calm and methodical approach that really works for me.  I have just finished up my first 6 months of working with him and am extremely pleased with the progress I have made in regard to weight loss, core strength, and overall fitness levels.  As a man in my late 40s who has never been particularly athletic and has struggled with his weight, Tony has been very conscientious about how he approaches my workouts.  I have been doing 2-3 sessions a week with him and have seen slow but steady progress.  He pushes me just enough to keep me engaged, explains exactly what he needs to, but doesn't come across as pedantic or overly "coachy" to someone like myself.  I'm grateful for his advice and guidance and would highly recommend him no matter what your background or fitness goals.  He's an excellent trainer and I certainly wish him all the best as he continues to grow his business.

image I think the best review I can give of Transformations Fitness and its sole proprietor, Tony Rodriguez Larkin, is to immediately state that, as of my writing this, I've been a client for 6+ years continuously.  Like any patronage, I wouldn't continue it if the business wasn't worthy of my money and/or time.  This one is, and Tony is the reason why.What I value about Transformations Fitness is that it's more than a fitness program, it's a lifestyle program.  Tony teaches habits, techniques, and thought processes which will help alter your perceptions of how you live, for the better.  (I like to think this is the reason Tony went with the word "Transformations" in the business name.)  In addition, there's strong nutritional guidance which has been my favorite part of the program and likely where I've gained the most benefit.  To this day he shares his insights in all these areas in (at least) monthly newsletters with the latest techniques, trends, and discussion points which I very-much look forward to.I'd also like to note Tony is a man of incredible character.  Early in my tenure as a client he held a challenge, which he routinely does to help motivate the client base in new ways, and made a mistake in calculating the results.  After the prizes had been awarded a member noted the mistake in the calculations.  I had been part of a duo originally declared the winner, which turned out to be in error.  I watched Tony humbly admit the error, pay the prize to the (correct) winners, and when my partner and I tried to give our prizes back he insisted we keep them, likely meaning he operated that challenge at a loss.  I noted this and have never forgotten it.  Though I have seen many examples of his character throughout the years I thought this was a good one to share.  You always feel better giving your money to someone you know works hard, is humble, and will do the right thing.Regarding the workouts, there are three options offered: group, semi-private, and private, each getting progressively more expensive because the individual time dedicated to them member increases.  I find the best value in the semi-private sessions because it's a great balance of (trainer dedicated) member time vs. cost.  The workout is individually tailored and he focuses more on you early in your 5-week program and it tapers off in later weeks as you get used to the routine.  When the workout changes, in line with your goals, the cycle begins anew.  He's never absent from your workouts, checks on you routinely to validate form, and always accessible, if need be.  If you want more personalized attention, private workouts are an option, at cost.  For a more value-friendly option there are group workouts but remember, though there is some variance in intensity where he can, the dynamics of a group workout make it that, in some ways, you're always somewhat beholden by the least-capable member of the group.  My strong recommendation is for the semi-privates, which is where I've seen most of his long-term clients gravitate, some in conjunction with group sessions.Remember you'll get out of it what you put in - in lifestyle, nutrition, and exercise.  Transformations Fitness is no different.  In Tony you'll find a great motivator and communicator which are highly effective tools for a personal trainer.  If you come by you'll find a cadre of long-term clients who will echo what I've said above.  I look forward to you joining us!
