I started training at Dojo Americana in 2013 and couldn't be happier with my experiences and the time I've hade there. One of the most important factors when selecting a martial arts gym to train at is the "vibe" you get when you walk in. Especially today, with the proliferation of "McDojos" and an "MMA expert" lurking at every corner. Tough guy t-shirts, lots of bravado, etc, etc. That is the opposite of what you get here. This gym truly captures everything that is great about BJJ and martial arts in general. There is a palpable spirit of unity, teamwork and friendship at Dojo Americana. The coach is one of the (apparently) few out there who has not completely dropped self defence tactics, in lieu of taking on a 100% "sport BJJ" approach. On the other hand, it's an awesome time training with these folks in prep for a competition, too. A word of caution, though; be prepared to train hard!

I was in Vista for work for a couple of weeks from Chicago & although I didnt get to drop in to as many classes as I wouldve liked, it was a great experience. No crazy uniform requirements. No crazy SoCal drop in fees. Just the love of jiu jitsu with super nice & friendly training partners. No egos or attitudes, just high level jiu jitsu. A great experience for someone who had only been training for 6 months prior to my visit. Professors Mark & Martin are good guys who run a good gym. Next time Im in the Vista office, Ill be dropping in again. If youre in the area you should check them out!

The owners, Mark and Martin, are an awesome combination.  Both are blackbelts who have done a lot within the field.  The instruction style is great, as they explain the technique or position, show you, and then help you understand how to execute the technique.  I always leave there tired because they keep the intensity at a sustainable level to get the cardio aspect and endurance needed for jiu jitsu.  Would highly recommend you go there if you are in the North County area and looking for a great school to learn the gentle art!!

My first BJJ instructor Professor Mark Hopkins is a phenomenal Black belt of the art.  He has a Judo background as well and can adjust his teaching style to any level of student that walks through the door.  I started with him while I was in the Marines as a white belt and now through the hard work and dedication years later I'm a brown belt and forever grateful for him helping me.  Wait it gets better......Professor Martin Figueroa is also a savage on the mats and has a vast knowledge and understanding of submission grappling for self defense as well as sport jiu jitsu.  With these two black belts running this academy is like finding a hidden gem.  Go check them out and see for yourself.
