Very clean old hotel in the heart of the city. Loved the antique cage elevator!

Honestly its a decent hotel and provides your basics: a place to lay your head at night, a bathroom, a microwave, a fridge, wifi, and a TV. Dont expect anything else, its essentially a hostel with private rooms. For the price and location, cant complain. It is also fairly safe, and I did not feel unsafe with this hotel or its location. There were not many homeless people near the hotel, but in other areas nearby there are a lot of encampments and tent cities. So safety was not an issue or concern here. My only gripe is that you have to climb up the stairs to get to the hotel and your room, there is no elevator. So if you have a disability/mobility issues, or have elderly people with you, I would skip this hotel and choose another one. Also, bathrooms are kind of dingy and have stains in the tub and toilet that wont come out. Walls are pretty thin so you can hear everything. Price, location, and safety are the strong points. For a short stay I would recommend, but maybe not for a longer one.

Our family (two adults and one child) stayed two nights at the Mithila in October 2023. We read the reviews before booking and decided to take a chance on a 'budget' hotel nearer to the heart of the city. It was a very charming experience. The building is old (which I personally found delightful) but clean. The front entrance is locked 24/7 which made us feel better about the hotel's location. It has a very cool antique cage elevator that makes one think of days gone by. We booked through a third party site and had no issues checking in. We stayed in a family room with a bunk bed which our kid loved. The metal bunk bed was a bit squeaky though. The bedding was clean and soft and the mattresses were comfortable for two nights' rest. There was also a surprisingly big closet which was great for our luggage. The free wifi worked well for our kid to stream on the tablet. The room had a tv but the cable wasn't really working that well while we were there. Not a huge issue as we were out and about playing tourist. There was an issue with the lights turning on and off on their own at night - maybe there is a resident ghost? Or maybe just strange wiring. The bathroom was small but clean and had a shower. Based on other reviews we expected that there would be more unhoused people in the neighborhood but we saw no more than in any other city. There is a cute little grocery store a few steps away, a delicious breakfast spot across the road and a yummy sandwich shop down the street. The hotel is also close to public transit and we actually were able to walk to Chinatown no problem. We never really felt unsafe walking to and from the hotel - even at night time. We had to check out quite early (3am) and were able to drop off our key cards at the front desk without any issues. We booked the hotel knowing it is not a five star resort and if you are looking for value for your dollar this really is the hotel for you. We would definitely stay again next time we visit San Francisco.
