image I attended nearly weekly therapy with Matthew May for almost five months, and it was a terribly disappointing experience. I chose him because he was trained by David Burns and seemed to have a strong reputation in the TEAM CBT community as one of the best of the best. He was very unreliable and disorganized: he sent me an email intended for a different patient, rescheduled my first session twice and had me come in on a Saturday (after I had scheduled time off work to make the original time), mixed up or forgot about appointments entirely, rarely took notes (and failed to remember who I was between sessions), and frequently ran over or under in time. Once he texted me and asked if I could come in early for my session but had me wait so long in the waiting room after arriving, that my session actually started late, but I was charged for the full amount of time. I was willing to overlook all these challenges for high quality therapy, but sadly the therapy failed to deliver as well. I'd say that every 2-3 sessions we'd have a good session but the ones in between were really unhelpful. Being quiet and introverted, I felt uncomfortable interrupting him, and he would end up rambling for long periods of time, eating up expensive therapy time. He would then rush into wanting to work on negative thoughts when he hadn't taken the time to really listen to the problem. In addition, there seemed to be no coherent treatment plan, so we'd just go from session to session without any clear goals. When I brought this up, he got very defensive. He also would make comments that were hurtful. Once when I was talking about my dissatisfaction with my career because I didn't find much meaning in my job, he remarked that many people are happy to just be able to put food on the table (esp. off-putting from somebody who charges people $500/hr for therapy). When I talked about my sadness around infertility, he suggested I look into adoption. And when I mentioned insecurities about my appearance, he made a bad joke about not giving makeovers in this office. I thought about dropping out constantly, but he insisted things would get better if I kept going. He wasn't receptive to feedback and blamed me when I didn't feel supported by him in therapy. I don't understand why I had such a terrible experience with him, but I have a suspicion that people with negative experiences in therapy are less likely to write reviews because they feel ashamed about it. If anyone else out there is wondering if they are alone in not feeling supported by their therapist, please know it's not your fault.

image Matt is an incredibly effective therapist, and the work we did together in college changed my life. I would strong recommend anyone struggling with difficult emotions or relationship problems schedule an appointment with Matt ASAP.I first went to see Matt May when I was a Stanford student. I had a really bad case of depression, brought on by a very real and severe crisis and as a result I had dropped out of Stanford for a quarter. I had tried traditional talk therapy as well as anti-depressants and I was still struggling after several months. In the course of a few therapy sessions Matt showed me techniques that completely eliminated my depression. My symptoms had completely disappeared in about 4 weeks. It sounds unbelievable but it really is true!I go back to see Matt when I hit a new major challenge in my life and he is unfailingly dedicated and helpful and can usually get me back on course in a single session. He mixes a thoughtful, empathetic and friendly working style with high speed treatment techniques developed by David Burns, the top researcher in the development of cognitive therapy, the world's most practiced evidence based therapy technique. The worst thing about Matt is that word has gotten out about how effective he is so his schedule is packed and his fees are pretty steep. That said, my experience is that he can accomplish in two hours what other therapists might take a year to do, so I believe it's often a better return on investment than therapists whose hourly rates might be half or a quarter of what Matt charges.

image If your mental health is a priority and you want the luxury of having the very best treatment, go see Dr. Matthew May. I had always dreamed of finally finding someone who could help me be happy in my life. Already a successful person in my career, I was somehow constantly battling various kinds of anxiety, depression and relationship problems. I had studied the work of Dr. Burns' approach on my own, by reading his books, but I still needed a guide- someone who is an expert but who would also listen to me with compassion. Dr. May listens with his heart, and really cares about his patients. He is humble and brilliant at the same time- a refreshing change from most of the therapists I had seen in the past. In a very short time, my work with Dr. May transformed my life and turned it into something I never imagined possible. What changed? The way I now accept myself, my strengths and my flaws, with humor, humility and peace. I now have the skills to help myself and to be my own best expert, through relapse prevention. If you want to reach enlightenment, and you are willing to work hard at it, you will be glad you worked with Dr. May. He will be the last therapist you ever see!

image I have known Matt May as a colleague since 2007.  I consider him to be one of the finest therapists in the world.  Matt is brilliant, funny, talented, very hard working, compassionate, gentle, thoughtful, honest, and responsible.  I have referred patients to him on over a dozen occasions and the results have been phenomenal.  He excels at treating people with depression, anxiety, phobias, PTSD, relationship issues, and procrastination.  He is also an amazing teacher.  I have had the privilege of seeing him teach at Stanford on many occasions and he understands the complexities of therapy on a very high level in addition to practicing his craft well.  I think that he is literally the best therapist that I have ever met and if I had a family member nearby who was struggling with a mental health issue, Matt May is the number one person I would send them to.
