With interest rates rising every few weeks I thought it was a good idea to see how this has changed the rates banks pay for a customer depositing money at their bank. The answer: same as before interest rates have gone up. Once again, banks screw consumers. Specifically, I made an appointment regarding an offer they have for one, two or three thousand dollars for depositing a large sum of money for a minimum of 90 days. The AI of their website almost forces you to go in person to the bank branch. Why? Who wants to waste their time doing this? Even though I could not select the offered option for a phone appointment a worker did call me. It was pure marketing. All terms used were "beneficial" "competitive" "high yield". I had to pin him down to actually do the math, which is all banking is, a percentage of an amount and then fees. Well it turns out this "special offer" of giving them $250k for 90 days and receiving 2000 comes out to be a measley .08 percent of taxable interest while they use this money to among other things charge a family trying to buy their first home almost 7 percent or higher plus the costs of the loan. Then, I asked him 'How much interest do you pay on a quarter of a million dollars deposited " He seriously didn't know. He had to find the information, and did not sound at all certain when he rattles off some numbers like .002 or .005 or... I said who in their right mind would move $250k to Chase for the pennies you pay? It is infuriating because I have an MBA in Finance and know how the banks do everything to take advantage of consumers. However, so many people want to do the right thing financially and the deck is stacked against them. So, what did I do? I went to Ally, a completely online institution. Nobody will try to pressure you to go to a branch where they will make it inconvenient to say no. I invested $250k at 5 percent and that rate is locked in for 13 months. No minimum balance but I am forced to move money around since bank accounts are only insurance up to $250 by FDIC so I have to open more accounts. Chase sends out TONS of marketing. Please do the math. Don't fall for the marketing. This is a crazy time and corporations like Chase spend millions to get consumers to give them their hard earned money and pay them pennies while their executives are billionaires.
