There are just days when you would like to go back to bed and try tomorrow. June 8, 2023 was one of those days for me. I was so looking forward to this specific tour. A glacier cruise, a trip to the Wildlife Conservation Center, plus some additional stops along the way, sounded good. Then Mother Nature entered the picture. Heavy winds, rain, very cold, the cruise was canceled and the time at the Conservation Center was mainly soaking rains. But our guide Holly, "Bless her heart" (in the words of my Southern friends) went above and beyond to make the day the best it could be under the circumstances. But when you are taking on 40 MPH and higher winds with mid 50's temperatures and throw rain in....she was fighting a losing battle. Holly was more disappointed in the day the most of us were. She, from the very beginning of the day had set in her mind to give her group the best day they could have asked for. She was patient with a few of the group that seemed to "lag" (we got off about 20 minutes late) and very quick with answers to questions. She had the knowledge that none of us would have had. We made several stops to catch sights of bald eagles, sheep, and of course the mountains along the Turnagain arm. If and when I return to Alaska, this will be rebooked and I personally hope that Holly is my guide. The few side chats I had with her, she struck me as a most interesting woman that I would have enjoyed hearing some of her tales from her travels. I know that in spite of the weather, I had a very good day, and that was due in no small part to Holly. Her personality and upbeat "can do" attitude helped.
