We were looking for an Interior Design partner for decoration of our home. We reviewed our choices and came to two options, one in DFW and Living Right Designs (LRD) locally. We selected LRD as we prefer to support a local business. We wanted a solution in the living/dining rooms that obscured the view into the house (windows face a road) but would still allow natural light. In the master bedroom we wanted full darkness to aid sleep during the day for mother and newborn. The upstairs and childrens rooms needed degrees of light reduction. Visual appeal and aesthetics were important, as we desire both beauty as well as function in our home. For the childrens rooms, translating panels, and in the upstairs room, roller shades with stationary panels met the need. We requested blackout shades in the master bedroom to black out the room during the day and stationary panels for aesthetics. For the living and dining rooms the solution proposed was the combination of stationary panels and roller shades. We deleted the roller shades for function and aesthetic reasons. LRD missed the mark in the living/dining rooms and the master bedroom. When I contacted LRD to discuss a solution and explained the living/dining rooms did not accomplish our goal, the response was to blame my wife and I for the removal of the roller shades (multiple times). While we did delete them, the purpose of the call was to determine what other solutions were available, and this response made it clear that LRD was either not able or not willing to partner with us in a solution. I then shifted to the master bedroom and asked about the blackout hardware for the blackout shades (install was only roller shades). The response was Those are blackout shades. There is a significant difference between a shade made from blackout material and a blackout shade installation. The approved concept drawings did not detail hardware, so absence of blackout hardware could not be verified. The installation is lacking in quality and aesthetics. On install the hardware finish was damaged in many locations. When I requested touch up paint (not a quality solution, but a stopgap), it was provided. When I requested the paint, and explained that the installation damaged the hardware, and adjustments further flaked the finish, LRDs response was that these are stationary panels, as if to state they not be moved. To be clear, our home is well used by an active family with rambunctious boys; open windows, vigorous play - these panels are going to move. I do not find it an acceptable solution that we should alter how we use our home to accommodate inferior quality finish. The stationary panel mounting brackets have #10 countersunk holes, which would use #10 flat head screws. Instead, #6 slotted hex washer head sheet metal screws were used. These were driven into the countersunk holes further damaging the finish and creating an unsightly look. Also, fasteners were missing, and the wall gouged to mark locations. On a positive note, the drapery panels are beautiful. There were expansive fabric choices. The quality of the panel build is excellent the stitching along the sides is invisible, and the weight, pattern, and backing create a beautiful product. When a set of the panels was not the correct length LRD stood by the quality of the installation and replaced the panels. Through almost a decade of working with VVIP interiors, internal/external designers, new and retrofit, I expect both quality and beauty in an install and partnership from a designer. In this case I am left with hardware that must be refinished, an installation I need to rework, and additional materials needed to reach the objective for which we hired LRD. With a total cost from LRD in five figures, and more needed to correct the install, the resulting product leaves much to be desired. Our search for an interior design partner to finish our home continues elsewhere.
