Surg Restaurant Group says they are "committed to transforming Milwaukee's restaurant scene by introducing a variety of upscale concepts ranging from fine dining to polished-casual." What they really mean is 'Surg Restaurant Group is committed to making as much money off of established local favorites as they can before the quality declines and what remains is an empty carcass with a name of something people used to love.' If you've followed Bradford Beach at all over this last 5 years you can see this true slogan at work. What started off as a great idea (the tiki huts) quickly became a corporate take over of a thriving volleyball community by business people who knew nothing about that community. 4 years ago Bradford Beach was a hub of midwest volleyball. This being rewarded on a national scale when the professional volleyball tour (AVP) brought one of their events to Milwaukee. Bringing the best volleyball players in the world to the shores of Lake Michigan. What used to be a unique and exciting venue has degraded under Surg's watch. The beach isn't maintained properly. They held 1 tournament last year. Rocks are everywhere. The nets are damaged, improperly set up and barely usable. They have catered to the lowest common denominator (rec 6's) to maximize charges on league fees and foot traffic purchasing from the Tiki Huts. I used to be proud to say I learned to play in Milwaukee. Surg took that away. I hope the money they made was worth it.
