The work itself, in a good condition is fine. This accounts for about 10% of calls. People rarely actually make use of the captions. Good If you need something for a couple months or if you only work like 2 days a week to supplement another job.
The software is broken, and training gives you an unreasonable idea of the work you'll be doing. Several software and hardware tools that could be easily utilized would make the job more accessible to captionists are non-existent. Your recommendations will be balled up and thrown in the trash. With my personal exposure to software development and what peripherals are available, it's clear that there are very few decision makers regarding the functionality of the Captioning Assistant position, and they are all over 60 and disinterested in improving the quality of captions for their customers or the quality of work for their employees.
What features the software does have that already would help improve work conditions are refused to the CA's by admin for what I can only assume are reasons of complication. Instead of working around these complications I've gathered that they are deliberately avoided.
Administration is held to a far lower standard of work and performance than Captioning Assistants and it would seem that they all are a group of friends or clique (At least in Appleton). HR is absolutely useless when it comes to medical or family matters. You will be punished (your metrics that translate into raises or promotions) for having a family, or having medical problems and there is absolutely no way around it
Also, there appears to be a bias toward promoting females over males, and most supervisors appear to have only worked for a couple months before being promoted. (Further indication of friends promoting friends)
Your experience, performance and professionalism is irrelevant.
I do not recommend working here as your primary job.
I will be leaving as soon as possible. This has been a terrible experience I would wish on nobody.
