Although it is now out of business, I spent much of my childhood in the local greenhouse with their beautiful parrots and large assortment of plants

I've been going to Upriver Nursery for many years and have always been pleased with their plants and their employees. This year, not so much. I purchased a groupon and a living social deal to there and can't find anything to buy that looks decent. I don't know what is going on but I would tend to think they aren't going to be in business much longer and they don't care anymore. I have been there four times in the last two weeks. I know that our warm weather came early this year so I could understand that things might not be quite ready yet. I am not looking for anything out of the ordinary. All I want is some wave petunias, geraniums, and lobelia to put in my planters. First I was told they'd be out "next week". Then I was told they'd have a lot more out for Mother's day. Today was my third trip this week and there is still nothing to choose from. Their petunias are only about as big around as a quarter, the only geraniums they have with any blooms are huge (and expensive) and their selection of hanging planters is pathetic. I asked about lobelia and was told it was still too little. I asked point blank what the heck is going on and was told they planted too much last year so cut back. Mother's day is only three days away and their selection sucks. I will not be buying any more deals to here and would strongly advise anyone else not to either. Too bad. They used to be a great place.

My mother-in-law introduced me to the Upriver Greenhouse 10 years ago.  Her flowers were always so beautiful.  I was very impressed and wanted to know how she grew such gorgeous flowers.  She said her secret was the Upriver Greenhouse.  For many years I would take her there and she would carefully explain what kind of flowers to buy and how to tend them.  I took her advise and now make my annual visit to buy all my flowers.  I've never been disappointed and every years my flowers are a sight to behold.I highly recommend to anyone who wants real value for their dollar to shop at Upriver Greenhouse for all their plants and flowers

I've given this place too many chances and I'm finally done. I went here several years ago and they were great. I bought painter's palate, which I cannot find anywhere else in Spokane. The spring season of 2012 the business offered a dollar deal (similar to groupon). I purchased 2 lilac bushes with this offer. The service was sooooo SLOW!! We went on a Saturday afternoon and they weren't very busy. NONE of their merchandise had prices on them. One of the workers (who come to find out is one of the owners) was watering plants and didn't offer us help. I'm a bit challenged in the gardening dept and need all the help I can get. After asking her for help, she finally obliged. I made a decision on a bush, but wanted to know the price first. She said she'd go inside and find out. After waiting for 15 minutes for her return, my husband became inpatient, so we just went inside to buy the 2 lilacs. Upon our arrival inside, I found the gal chatting it up with another worker. Only on our site did she then ask the girl about the price of the bush. We passed on further purchases and just wanted the lilacs in exchange for our coupon. That transaction went fine. I told my husband we wouldn't be going back to this place! The universe must've been testing my patience and eagerness for a good deal, because days later a groupon became available. I typically won't pass up a good deal, and even though I hesitated, I didn't pass this deal up either. For one for double the deal, I will usually buy one for me and one for my husband. Knowing I saw things I wanted before, I thought it'd be a easy transaction. I thought wrong. We arrived to the greenhouse on Mother's day Sunday. Beautiful Spring May day! So first of all, they had 2 workers working...REALLY!? Again, I struggled for help and the same lady was out and about, not offering her help. I asked her for help again and she was friendly and helped me with my decision. I settled on a couple Monet bushes and a firing bush. We went inside to find a rather long line and the only 2 workers in the joint helping get it down. After waiting in line for a good 20 minutes I get up to the front. The first thing the worker says to me upon seeing our groupons is that they can't be used towards bushes or shrubs (the only thing in our cart). Confused, I said "it doesn't have any exclusions on the groupon?" the worker called over the owner and asked for confirmation. The owner very rudely confirms that it can't be used towards bushes or shrubs. Still confused, I persisted. "There aren't any exclusions on the groupon, I don't understand how you can do that" I say to her; her response..."we can do whatever we want, it's our prerogative" Over her lack of customer service I threw my hands up and left. After spending way more time then I would of liked on a beautiful Sunday at this horrible establishment. Where else to go? The Home Depot. I'm always first to support small businesses and give them a chance, but when you treat customers like crap and could care less about helping them...guess what? We're not coming back! Once at home depot, I was further surprised to find how much of a markup Upriver had. The EXACT same bush I was going to purchase there was available to me at the home depot for 11.97 vs 31.97...yes people 20 markup. And not just that, the bushes at the home depot were better taken care of and come with a year guarantee!! After our most recent experience at Upriver, a good deal will not warrant my return. I'm afraid, I will never be back. If you're going to participate in such things like groupon, think about it first. If you do decide you want exclusions, put them on the offer!! That way the public knows what they're getting into. So folks, go to home depot for your garden loot!
