In need of a new mattress, I began pouring over Internet reviews on what constitutes a good mattress, consulting some published medical studies on mattress types and effects on back pain, and visiting local stores & warehouses to learn more about and try out different brands and firmness-types. After two weeks of doing this, not only was I exhausted, but utterly confused. Pillow-top? Memory foam? Inner coils? Gel infused? Platform bed? Slats? Bunky? Aeration? Arthropod & mold defense? Natural fibers? By Friday 12 July, I was ready to buy a tatami mat and a futon and escape the countless options only obscured by the lack of any consensus on what would be best for me.
And then I walked into the Kirkland, WA Sleep Country. At first I was trepidatious. Three employees were convened comfortably in a distant corner, and I assumed I'd have to interrupt their chat if I wanted help. My first pleasant surprise was Aliya Matthews' animated greeting. She walked right over to me with a big smile and a sincere greeting. Having spent over a week at more than a dozen King County stores practically begging sales people to speak with me about their products only to be quickly brushed off, I was thrilled Aliya seemed to want to share with me the benefits of Sleep Country's different lines.
But that wasn't all. Never once did I feel pressured to purchase anything. Aliya invited me to try lying on the different mattresses while she kept a respectful distance, always ready to answer my questions or make helpful comments. She explainer her philosophy that her job was to listen to me as I drew my own conclusions about what felt best for me, arriving at what she called the "aha" moment. By the time I was trying my 4th mattress I felt like I was shopping with a good friend. And merchants should pay attention: making a customer feel comfortable and valued not only increases the chance they'll buy, but it earns positive, free word-of-mouth advertising. Although I'm not sure what I'll buy, I'll definitely be telling all my friends about Totem Lake's Sleep Country & the outstanding customer service experience I had there.
One more note. A local competitor had told me that Sleep Country's prices would be higher than theirs due to Sleep Country's 90 night guarantee (or maybe it's 100 nights). But I learned (thanks, Aliya) that Sleep Country will price match any competitor--local or online. What's more, other companies wanted to charge me to deliver their products, with an additional charge to set the products up. Sleep Country delivers free, and sets up free. And more--other companies told me that once I left with their mattress there would be no way for me to return it if I didn't like it. All sales final. Not so with Sleep Country--they stand behind their products.
When we decide to buy, we're going to Sleep Country. Unbeatable prices on excellent products, and outstanding customer service. Though I get the feeling Sleep Country has a generally competent and enthusiastic sale staff, if you go to the Kirkland Totem Lake store, ask for Aliya Matthews.
