I have just ingested the worst sandwich in my 59 years of life. Behold, the reuben sandwich at Country Cafe in Bothell. The "piled high" corned beef was three thin slabs of red leather that was tougher than Tyvek. If you made a pair of boots out of this "meat", they would last a lifetime. Surrounding this rawhide was standard issue day-old white bread sprayed with more oil than you'll find in the drain pan of a Jiffy Lube. Keeping the sandwich from slipping out of my fingers proved challenging because of the white mayo-like goo oozing out of the holes in the over-toasted bread. The flavorless sauerkraut, also coated in white jelly, slid off the meat every time I raised the sandwich to my mouth. I had to hold the bread lightly or the kraut would squirt out the sides like a greasy thumb on a wet watermelon seed. And just in case you needed more lube, the french fries were double fried...but at least they were cold. This treat was served with a cup of a neon orange gelatinous substance called "thousand island dressing" - just in case you needed a bit more friction reduction. Perhaps its function is to move this delight through your system more quickly. The price of this culinary greasepit? Two sandwiches, two sodas = $34. I should have spent the money on an oil change. And chewed on my shoe.
