I figured I would treat my wife to a dinner in a location we had never been before. Groupon, and several reviews had slated that this place was absolutely fantastic, so I figured "Why not give it a go!" Arriving on site (Roughly around 7pm), we were greeted by friendly staff who quickly seated us, and helped sort out an issue with groupon (not a negative to the restaurant, they were very helpful.) The problems occurred with the meals themselves. We ordered an appetizer (the cactus Bulb or something (its a bloomin onion). That was actually delicious, with the one exception that it was not cut properly to allow us to easily pull the onion apart. We had to destroy it and eat it with forks, but with ranch and the spicy ranch it was very tasty. My wife got the home made meatloaf (with a side of potato salad and green beans), and I got the country fried steak (with a side of mashed potatoes and "The Veggi of the Day".) I will make a note that my wife asked the waitress if the green beans were fresh, and she was told "Yes". When our meals arrived (soon after the bloomin onion), my country fried steak (with the potatoes and corn) was luke warm at best. The gravy had time to do that "hardening" thing that gravy does when it is left out for a few minutes. The potatoes were generic and bland to say the least, but the gravy covering both the steak and the potatoes was actually not terrible (were it warmer.) Like the gravy, the steak was not terrible, but it was also on the cold side. All and all, my plate looked like it had been sitting out for a solid 10 or so minutes before being served to me. My wife was similarly affected, as her meat loaf would have been dry and cold were it not saturated in so much gravy that she could not taste the meat. Even the gravy was tasteless, and on top of all of the damage on her plate, the green beans she ordered, were most decidedly NOT fresh. Like my corn, the green beans must have come from a can. There is a distinct difference in taste from fresh green beans, and the watered down abominations that slop out of one of those 99 cent green giant containers. She joked, "At least they added some ham for flavor" before pushing the dish aside to try and finish her luke warm meal. I wanted to at least be fair, the bloomin onion was hot on arrival and was delicious. it just seemed like both my wife's and my own plates were cooked literally at the same time as our bloomin onion, which meant that the 10 minutes given for us to finish our bloomin onion, was spent with our actual entrees sitting on the side cooling down before delivery. The canned corn and green beans were a pretty egregious insult to us, which will pretty much mean that should we ever decide to give this restaurant a second chance, we would probably never touch any of the vegetables. in closing, it is possible that other items on the menu are actually very good. my wife actually enjoyed her potato salad, and I may have enjoyed the country fried steak were it hot and fresh. But after this experience it would take some convincing to come back to nokesville to give the restaurant another chance. if you go, be sure to skip the veggies, I would have to watch the chef make them to believe that they are fresh, and not "fresh" from a can. the cost of the food was definitely an attractive selling point for the visit, I would hope that other items on the menu are worth the investment. as of right now, definitely skip the meatloaf and any veggies on the menu.
