  • RIGOROUS STUDIES? Anonymous report

The APTA does NOT list on its site any statement that guarantees that the APTA or any other organisation reviews all physical therapy modalities/treatments/exercises for SAFETY by putting them through the scrutiny of a peer review medical board of pts and orthopedists ! CAN THE PUBLIC TRUST PHYSICAL THERAPY TO BE SAFE ?EXAMPLE: "LATERAL HIP DISTRACTION WITH A BELT AND ROTATIONS/ MOBILISATIONS" does not appear to have ever been ethically tested on cadavers, and appears to be an attempt by pts and anecdotal article authors to alter( damage!) the arthrokinematics (native joint congruity) of the femur with the acetabulum ! THERE IS NO PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE JOURNAL STUDY OF CADAVERS OR LIVING HUMANS THAT PROVES THAT DISTRACTION IS NOT DANGEROUS, IS SAFE, AND OF ANY BENEFIT. YET, PTs have been using their subjective, unmeasured body weight and strength to pull at the hip capsule ligaments while twisting the femur, and there are many patients reporting/commenting that pts have injured them with this! In fact, insurance statistics list joint manipulation as one of the highest causes of iatrogenic injuries!APTA DOES NOT STATE THAT IT IS BANNING DISTRACTION, PENDING ADEQUATE STUDY! In fact, a recent, ethical, cadaver journal study on long axis distraction of the hip states that there has not been previous study of distraction with ultrasound and a meter. ThisPT distraction, which is not done with ultrasound guidance and a tension meter could cause: ligamentous laxity with subluxation, FAI, loss of joint congruity, wear/tear, labrum tear, and twisting of knees, ankles, feet, and spine! In fact, orthopedic studies on distraction for surgery prove that plication is needed! AN ETHICAL PROFESSION MUST DO RIGOROUS STUDIES BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO PULL APART HIPS WITH BELTS! UNACCEPTABLE! THE PUBLIC HAS A LEGAL RIGHT TO KNOW!please save for documentation, as iatrogenic injuries must be prevented.
