12 years ago, based on our realtor’s (Rick Higgerson) recommendation, we hired W & D to help us. We bought a property to build a house on a challenging hillside wood lot. When we first met Graham from W& D, he walked property with us. Our request was not simple: “Can you turn this wooded hillside lot into a building lot that can accommodate a house, playground, front yard, and driveway? And, create small lawn area for soccer, etc. in lower, flatter area of property? And, please don’t take down any large hard wood trees?”. Graham was excited about the project, super friendly, and confident he could get it done. And he did! He was able to check all the boxes. He created a stable building lot, went above and beyond to get it done on time, and -thanks to his hard work-the project timeline proceeded on schedule. He was a real partner with our project and we could not have done it without his help. He even protected the trees!!! (After we moved in our neighbors thanked us for not “clear cutting” and for protecting the older trees.) After 12 years we appreciate W& D and Graham’s expertise even more. Moving land around safely and operating large excavators skillfully requires a professional but, what we didn’t realize is how much more is required. If earth is not graded perfectly, the result could be pooling, sink holes, erosion, and flooding. Had we hired the wrong excavator, the soil could have become unstable, the water could have entered basement, etc. I now realize how lucky we are that we found W&D. I liken Graham to an to an earth surgeon. Only instead of using hand held instruments, he’s operating with huge equipment. Graham recreated our landscape with such skill. For example, flat lawn areas and driveway are actually not flat. They each have a subtle grading directing water away from pooling near the house, play areas or driveway. Entire lot is graded to direct water downward slowly so there has been no erosion nor flooding. Even the lower field remains flood free. Several years later, when presented with a similar building challenge, we knew who to call. Again, their expertise has lasted the test of time. Even though the lower level of the house is built into a hillside, the land is graded in such a way that water slowly travels away from the house preventing pooling and erosion. Many years have passed since that project and again, the first floor remains dry, the hillside remains stable, and we are so grateful we were able to work with W & D!
