My mom has had 4 different stays in skilled nursing facilities in the last 5 months. Her favorite skilled nursing center wasn't an option after her last hospital stay and the hospital recommended Encompass. The PT/OT therapists are top notch. They truly worked to improve my mom's mobility and posture. The staff is very friendly and they go out of their way to help you and answer questions. The communication between all the staff members and family is excellent. It was so easy to find out information about my mom's care plan, something that has been difficult at other centers. My mom found the beds to be very comfortable. The only downsides were my mom didn't love staying there because she didn't like the more hospital feeling of the rooms, no communal dining or social activities. She liked her care but was often bored on the weekends when there was no therapy. The other skilled nursing center she loves has craft days, game days, and a communal dining room. We did visit her nearly every day but she just felt more isolated here. Luckily, Encompass is great at rehabbing patients quickly and she spent only 14 days here compared to months at the other centers for the same infection recovery.

I had a total knee replacement on 9/25/2023. I was released from the hospital with an oxygen sat rate of 70% & a fever to an assisted living facility that I paid for out of pocket. 7 days later a nurse from home health came to see me and said I didn't belong in assisted living and obviously thought my condition was such I needed to be in a hospital setting so I was transferred to Encompass. I came to the facility ambulatory on 10/2/2023 and able to take care of myself. After a day or two I was no longer able to walk or put any weight on the leg & had to use a wheelchair. I was in extreme pain and was forced to continue physical therapy where I was forced to walk, peddle a bike & climb stairs among other things. The doctors kept changing my medications and until finally I discovered a large pooling of blood on my upper inner thigh and I requested an x-ray because at that point I was sure my leg had fractured which would explain the extreme pain, the pooling of blood and the inability to put any weight on the leg with out severe unbearable pain. I had 3 doctors and a PA that were all told of the extreme pain and knew the changes. They ordered the x-ray by a mobile unit that came late on a Saturday night. I asked for results for a couple days but no one had any and they didn't seem concerned. Meanwhile I had to continue the PT schedule of 3 hours per day. The pain was radiating up onto my back and spine area but I was told Medicare would throw me out if I didn't do their PT. Approximately 3 days later I was told there was no fracture. I was in the facility until Medicare threw me out on 10/13/2023. I am alone and have stairs to my home so I was admitted to a skilled nursing rehab where I was required to do their PT daily. I had a follow up with my surgeon on 10/24/2023 where a routine post op x-ray was taken and a fracture to my femur was discovered. We called the mobile x-ray facility to request a disc of the x-ray that was taken on October 6th. They sent the disc to my surgeon & upon receiving it and reviewing it we discovered they had taken an x-ray of my hip, not my leg & of course my hip was not fractured. The doctors at Encompass should have caught that right away. The facts that I was ambulatory and then wasn't, wasn't able to put any weight on the leg without crying in extreme pain, the pooling of blood & upping my pain meds and them not even beginning to touch the pain which had been well managed when I was admitted should have told them the leg was fractured just as I had told them. The other thing they did was put my pain meds PRN, not scheduled, but failed to inform me of that so I was always late with pain meds because I'd try to be patient with the nurse to bring them to me. I'd have to keep asking for them and no one ever told me until just before discharge that they were PRN & I needed to ask. My surgeon said he couldn't believe I was able to walk on that fracture. I spent the next 4 months in rehab waiting for the leg to heal enough that they could let me put weight on it. The leg doesn't bend today of course, is completely numb & I have to use both a wheelchair and a walker. Several of the nurses there were excellent, the PTs obviously don't listen and can't be that well trained not to notice my symptoms were such that they weren't normal. Some of the aides were downright rude, obviously overworked. Food is awful. This is definitely not a recommend.

In the spirit of disclosure, I am a former Quality Director at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Utah. I recently left there to pursue another career opportunity. I'm in a unique position to judge quality of care provided by hospitals as I've previously worked in multiple hospital systems across the valley. Encompass Health is an outstanding facility dedicated to providing an excellent rehabilitation program with outstanding physicians, nurses, therapists, and other staff. The core values of the hospital are centered around the caring principles of Comfort, Professionalism, and Respect. The hospital would highly recommend ratings are typically high. If you or your family is in the need of inpatient rehabilitation, I'd recommend you consider Encompass Health.

Not a place I would recommend for a loved one. Ever since my dad was admitted we had problems. The rehab is amazing! And there was only a couple of nurses and aids that were amazing as well! Other than that, the staff are not on the same page. Doctors don't communicate with nursing staff. Nursing staff didn't communicate with doctors. The management staff and our case manager doesn't communicate with each other as well. They lost my Dad's heart monitor and no one knew where it went. One night a nurse just left him in his wheelchair and clocked out of her shift. It wasn't until 3-4 hours later that my mom finally was able to get someone to help my dad. If my mom didn't call anyone, who knows how long my dad would've been sitting there? They had my dad sitting in his diaper for 3 hours before someone changed him. One day, my dad pressed his call button, and both of us overheard 2 nurses outside my Dad's door. They were arguing with each other trying to figure out who was going to come in and help. I would not recommend Encompass to anyone!

I have had some good experiences (more than I might like) at University of Utah Medical Center, but I never left an online review. My experience at Encompass was so exceptional that I would not feel good if I didn't take a moment to say, "Thank you," to the Administration, Nurses, PT and OT staff and wonderful Nursing Assistants. What surprised me, in a good way, is that on many days and nights I was not assigned a Nursing Assistant, just an RN who took care of just a few patients. They were incredibly kind and helpful and never even hinted that the patient care tasks they were performing should be left to CNAs. I want to list some names but I won't start because there are too many and I would inevitably leave someone off the list. This one is easy, 10 stars out of 5.
