Growing up on the East Coast, cheese steak restaurants were plentiful and on average a cut above the quality of local cheese steak restaurants here in Utah Valley. However, I was proven wrong when I decided to try out Angels of Philly on a recommendation from a friend and my nose. When you first walk in, the immediate impression I got was a work in progress. What the restaurant lacks in atmosphere they make up with their sandwiches; a ploy used by the J-Dawgs of BYU Campus fame. I ordered the original cheese steak meal, which on the menu is the Cheese Steak Whiz Wit, and was absolutely blown away. It was a taste of home. While the large meal runs around 12 bucks after tax, it is most certainly worth every penny and cheaper than a plane ticket. For those people who are trying to stretch their pennies, the regular meal, which is plenty for anyone, is around 7 bucks. The steak they use is prime rib cut, almost minced to a ground steak texture. They also use the "original" cheese found on the first philly steaks, which is cheese whiz. While my choice may clog the arteries of lesser men, for those more interested in healthier options they are available. Their beer-battered steak-cut fries were also a huge surprise and I would rate the fries as the best served in Utah Valley. While it took several attempts to locate this jewel next to Comedy Sports, it was worth the time and effort. I will be back for more.
